Only ever seen them used for freshwater and I wouldn't know anything about that :)

I have used them in fresh water many times. You can get a cheap inline one that clips to a rod. I've ofter thought that it might be of some good use for tope fishing, if it can be cliped on and off during casting. The problem is that they work when line moves over a roller wheel. This might not work for smaller fish as the line does not move that much as there is generally a grip lead in place so the rod tip bounces with very little movement.

There might be an odd time when they would come in handy, especially in calm conditions when you might be waiting for bites but other that that, I'm not 100% sure they are worth spending the money on.

Anyone else out there try them?

Chris there is no need for a bite alarm cause most sea fish hit u hard so u always see the bite anyway but sure u don't catch fish anyway   :D

i fish of alarms most of the time but i have never used them on the shore . i recently bought some delkims which unlike the otheres have no moving parts and are suitable for saltwater use ...............they are a horrendous price though ........£60 for the basic one and £120+ for the ones with radio transmitters !

When shore tope fishing, I often use a freshwater anglers bobbin that can be clipped onto the line at one end and the rod rest at the other. They are a good visual aid when using reels that do not have an audible rachet.

at the carp lake where i fish there are a couple of the guys that have mobile with the same ringtone as fox alarms ..........you can imagine the rest , whats worse than that are some of the birds there have mastered the art of immitating alarms and i have been regularly wakened by wee tweety birdies doing delkim impersinations
