I'd like a telescopic rod but are they worth buying?

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

I'd like a telescopic rod but are they worth buying?

Postby emar » Sat Jun 23, 2018 5:12 pm

Hi folks,

I've been considering a telescopic rod mainly because they're easy to carry around while out cycling.
I don't really know if they're any good, many people say they break easier than a 3 or 4 piece rod.

I went to two local fishing stores and they said forget about getting a telescopic.
When I think about it, you still have to slot a 3 or 4 piece rod together, so why would a telescopic be a bad idea?

I like the idea of sticking a rod in my backpack rather than carrying a tube around with me.

Mostly I'll be fishing off cliffs, and maybe a few streams.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Telescopic rod will do the job for you and will suit you transport wise ..Maybe some sacrifices regarding casting and action though..

Rings can break very easy , Id keep it to 11 ft max and 3 piece for spinning etc

Tight lines...

If i could make a suggestion , Identify one of the makes you like and see does any fishing shop locally stock it ?

Although it may not be expensive to buy online it may feel terrible ...

Maybe go and see it , and see how it feels if possible etc

There's two fishing stores here in our city and both told me to avoid telescopic rods, they were showing me tubes, 3 piece rods.
But I'm willing to give one a try, they can't be that bad, considering they're still separate pieces that slot together right.

Hi,I'd personally go with a tube and carry it on my back or tape it the bike than sacrifice landing a decent fish a with less superior rod. After all its about the pleasure of fishing too. Don't forget, if your fishing cliffs, u may need a very sturdy rod capable of hauling a string of mackerel or decent Pollock up a cliff/rocks and some good length so u don't go too close to the edge. Telescopics, although handy won't last as long. Tight lines

Nice, and only 75cm closed.
One or two reviews about not casting over 2oz.

Now you guys have me thinking about a 4 piece rod..
I don't think I want a fiberglass rod, if they break they might shatter.
What about a carbon fiber rod?
That NGT Xtreme looks nice but it's fiber glass and only $14.
I want a bit of style as well but durability is important right.

Thanks for the tips!

Yea that looks like a decent rod, the 4 piece.
So am I wasting my time with these telescopics?

As a tourist I found mine very succesful. Caught mackeral, pollack and sea trout in Norway and it fit neatly into suitcase.
On a bike you could easily tie a 3-piece rod to the top tube. Or use one of thesehttps://goo.gl/images/cP6My1

I use a telescopic rod because it's handy to carry round public transport if I'm fishing around the city etc. But I'd never do a full days fishing on one.

I was thinking the same last year but went with a 3 piece shakespeare agility. No regrets.

I didn't get one yet, was looking at a few the other night, the weather is getting nice,
Just want to head off on my bike and find a few quite streams, spend a bit of quite time fishing.
I still really like the idea of having a fold up rod that I can stick on my back pack.

The guys in waterford were telling me not to get a telescopic last time I visited, but they were selling them last time I looked.

For streams? Then a telescopic would do fine, there ok when using a single lure or hook for 1-2lb fish, but I wouldn’t deadbait with them. You should be grand in a stream,

I don't so, It's perfect for bass angling, this fishing rod helps you catch your trophy fish season after season. But it's not perfect for pros and not so good for saltwater. You can find here cheap telescopic fishing rod: https://fishingstaff.com/best-telescopic-fishing-rod/.
