Fixed spool for bass rod

Wed Mar 13, 2013 12:14 am

Hi all just looking for some advice on a fixed spool reel for a potential new rod.
I'm looking at getting a light beachcaster 3-4oz for bass something like a Penn powerstix.

What would ye have in mind as a good partner to a rod like this?

Get a size 4000 shimano reel you will get a good one for 50euro they will outlast the other brands of reel.Any bigger than a 4000 on a light bass rod feels to heavy in my opinion.Think paul mason on here east coast tackle is now stocking shimano gear he is sound to deal with.
I have shimano reels for nearly 20yrs with and i wouldnt be the most gentle with stuff and i ve never had a single problem stay away from cheaper brands the wont last long

I'd go with the 13 ft rod its nice and light for scratching away. I think the 15 is to big

Have a look for Abu cardinal 177 swi, brilliant little reel for the money and should balance a 2-4 oz rod nicely.

If its a surf rod for fishing bait for bass I'd suggest to look at the shakespere salt flattie a traditional style light rod that you could ledger for bass and hold in your hand in the surf.

This style of fishing is brilliant, ledgering a bit of crab along the surf waiting for that distinctive bite and run of a bass.

I had a stradic 5000fj on a daiwa supercast bass and it was pure bliss. Loaded with braid mind you.

have actually picked up a light 2-4oz Shakespeare odessa bass rod 11'6" on the for sale section here. I assume anything bigger than a 4000 would be too heavy on a light rod like that?

I don't thing so I'd being looking at A Shimano 5000 size or a Daiwa 4000 size for a rod of that rating should balance it well, but its up to personal preference in the end.

Use an 11' 6" Shakespeare Salt Bass 2-4oz with Shimano 5000 GTEB, 12lbs fox super steel.......no problems......no fish either yet, I find it nice and balanced setup, light enough to hold close in for surf

I use a Penn Captiva 2 6000 on a Shakespeare salt 11'6 Bass rod rated to 4oz. The 6000 size reel feels good to me on a light bass rod although I can also see how people could prefer a lighter reel while legering.

I use a shimano 6000 on a 12ft6 rod so I'd say a shimamo 5000 would suit a 11ft6 better...
