Rods

When I got back into sea fishing 3 years ago I bought myself a Shakespeare Salt Bass rod (casts 2-4oz).

Even after using it for 3 years it felt very heavy & cumbersome (previously I was used to trout fly & spinning rods).

This year I bought a heavier surf rod, 14ft long & rated to cast 4-8oz.

The Bass rod now feels like a "wand" and is an absolute dream to cast with.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I found the same although I'd only use the 12ft surf but its a lot more cumbersome than the 12ft pike set ups i was used of . The real especially contributes to it i think as the penn fixed spool I'm using is twice the size of any of the ones i was using to drag 30 pound pike in with !

i used to go with a 15ft surf 420 i think it was.. . .it was like a poker, and very heavy. i now have a jaxon bass rod and a penn powerstix pro. . makes a hell of a difference to my casting, and makes fishing more enjoyable

different rods for different types of fishing you couldnt fish for cod in a storm with a bass rod as you couldnt cast a 6 oz weight into a force 4 with it, so match the rod to the conditions ,it is nice to use as light a set up as possible as you will get more sport from your fish,if you limit yourself to one type of rod you will limit yourself to certain conditions and bait sizes ,i own about 12 rods and would use most of them during the year ,if i dont use one in a year i sell it and buy something different

I started trout fishing and was used to a old daiwa fibre glass rod which is as heavy as a tea bag.
I then bought a leada 12ft beachcaster which felt like someone had handed me half a tree, quickly replaced with a 13ft salt mx and a 12ft salt fs both very nice and handle most conditions, my new rod is a pwer aero 14ft which hasnt been used just yet but Ive bought it for special occasions
last but not least is the savage 9ft spinning rod. Going from one to the other is something Ive had to get used to, reels make a massive difference aswell but as Roger said their there for a variety of conditions. Once in a while I like using the old leada just to test my technique as the weight means you can feel how the rod is moving a lot more, but thats just preference.

Roger has it perfect mines just some extra mumbles to back him up haha

i started with ron thompson beach rod mated with penn jigmaster 500 and loaded with 30lbs mono .the rod feels like a broomstick or flag pool and the reel heavy like a tank but despite of all i learned my first distance casting with this set up .
