New beach set up help needed

Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:30 am

hi all , I got a leeda northstar 12 ft Fs rod and a penn gen x 7000 fixed spool reel last year on the advice of the tackle shop. I have caught a few fish but find it very heavy? I'm looking to get a multiplier set up and was considering the shimano vengeance surf or the shakespear salt mx paired to an okuma magnetex 30 reel , any advice on the above or other set ups would be great Thanks :)

The shakespeare salt is a great rod for the money. What kind of ground do you fish over? I'd be inclined to drop to a 20 rather than the 30 as I feel it's a better balanced setup although if you intend using a line greater than .35mm diameter the 20 won't hold much. You will read mixed reports on the okuma multipliers but I think they're pretty good value for money, have a magnetix 20 myself for 4 years and haven't had any issues with it myself, it's no 7ht mind you  Oh and don't worry about getting used to a multiplier, you won't want to see a fixed spool again in a hurry

Thanks for the feedback lads, any other rods or reels I should look at ? I've been fishing for twenty years but mainly course and game as well as a bit off the rocks. I'd be looking to fish off beaches like Garretstown so probably a mixture of ground

Have you a budget in mind? The Ian golds range of rods are worth a look but more expensive than the shakey salt. Reel wise then for mixed ground you could look at the likes of a Penn 525, but then you're talking probably twice the price of the okuma.

I was hoping to spend in or around 200 for the two and i seen a combo deal for the shakespeare for 99 sterling and the Shimano for another 50. Im working at the minute so I'll look at the Ian gold range this evening . Thanks for all the feedback :)

Hi Preston, i have had the shakespeare salt in the 15ft version, fine rod and good value for money but recently invested in an Ian Golds International match and it is worth every cent, cost a bit more but definately worth it. If you do decide on an ian golds contact Paul Mason on the site and he will sort you out

Will do , Paul was on to me earlier allright I must try the site in the morning cos my net is patchy at the min :( To be honest I'd be lookin for somethin cheaper I'd say at least untill i get into the swing of it . Any advice on multipliers lads I've never used one and the okuma seems to be in most of the combo deals but are they any good

As far as multipliers go, don't overlook the slosh 20. VERY user friendly and will stand up to almost any type of fishing!!!! I got one a few months ago 2nd hNd but as new for €80 and still cannot say a bad word about the reel. Hope this helps

I use a salt mx 12ft and a penn 515 never had any issues with them, you can pick up the slightly older salt model for around £50 inc postage, mine was from glasgow angling centre although always check out local shops as I found it for £45 2 weeks later. The penn 515 is great although in the region of £130-140 so maybe a little pricey especially if you end up not liking multi's.
I put my money into reels first buying the 515 and then a biomaster (fixed spool) I used 2 salts rods mx/fs but now have upgraded to a shimano twin top for the fixed spool.
The mx has held well on anything Ive fished and is a nice starting point but again it took me the gutts of 2-3months before I actually enjoyed using a multi, now Im casting further and prefere it over the fixed spool (alwats take both anyway).
However be carefull on all of this becuase if you dont like it and then leave it to one side youll have wasted a lot of money, I persisted through the "I cant cast" or "bleep this its too akward" stages and as above find everything has improved.
Hope this helps a little

not to steer you away from the local tackle shops but glassgow angling are selling shakespere salt mx and pen mag reels for around 135 pound, always hit your local shop for a bargain after all there the ones that support you with info and bait when needed they may match the price
8) 8) and i think the 7hts are much easier than slosh 20s to cast

Any particular reason why you are looking at a multiplier rather than a FS reel?

I'd like a reel for light boat use too and I find fixed spool's aren't up to the job . I've always had fixed spool and find they give after regular heavy beach work and even light boat work ruins them

That's fair enough, I thought it was only for beach work.. Penn 525 or slosh20 would prob be your man so :)

I was lookin at both today and had a look at the abu 6000 . I'll invest in somethin heavier for the boat eventually but funds are tight so i just need somethin Thats goin to last . Cheers for the reply :)

Al is right 525 then if your wanting to use it for light boat work, again id run into your local tackle shop and see about either old models or deals that look good. I picked up an uglystik 9ft (30lb class) and actually a 535 mag for around 120 sterling. The 535 is a little edgy but its handled congers and on first time use nearly landed me a nice tope. Get to know local guys well because if you mention what your after and price range they may be able to work you a nice set for cheaper than online. Also in my case the more business I put their way the more ive ended up getting back.
I now spend 90% of my lunch after going in to buy some hooks or beads talking about places that are fishing well and general good tips.
Ps its maybe also bad cause I spend a lot of that time looking at NEW SHINYS! haha
