Hi Brian I haven't seen the Abu XP but I do know if you are new to multipliers and want one for the rough stuff you can't go wrong with a SL30SH or an underfilled SL20SH. Both are very cheap to buy for what they are. The only downfall with them is you have to spray oil on the handle regularily to stop it from corrroding. A bit of a service now and again and theres no reason you wont get 20+ years from these reels. They are so easy to cast. Just put the two red brake blocks in when you are starting out and you wont go far wrong.

hey wildrover why do you underfill the slosh 20s?????? does it help with the centifrugal braking

Hi Aussie I don't underfill the 20's. I was saying to Brian that if he's new to multipliers he's better off underfilling the 20's as there's less of a chance of the dreaded birdies. As his confindance in the equipment grows then also the levels can come up without too much fear of over runs. The 30 is a tamer reel but it is a tad bulkier. I have both & love them but for Brian it would be a case of seeing what is more comfortable for him. That is if he goes for the SLOSH. Either way Brian best of luck with your hunt and I hope this also answers your query Aussie.

A good multiplier to buy Is a second hand slosh 30. I have a saltist myself and think they are an excellent allrounder but they are not cheap. I think abu make some of the best rods out there .There reels are way overrated in my opinion. . Good luck with what ever decision you make .

I used to have that rod myself brian its a good quality rod for the price very strong, not great for casting and you would want to have something half descent to notice a bite.

I bought the same rod three wks ago and put a penn 525 on it. It's my first time using a multi rod and reel, some people say there a fast reel but i dont mind it, like wild rover said i under filled mine put just over a 100 yrds on just to get used to it and in case i got a whopper of nest. Its casts fine and doesnt flop around in the wind as much as other rods i have. I have caught flats on it and cud see the tap tap on the rod so the bite detection isnt that bad as some people mite say. It will be perfect for the smoothie fishing you want to do later on. Well thats all i can say as i haven't caught many fish due to the lack of sessions hope it helps
