Daiwa 7HT Turbo or Mag

Sold my beach outfit last year due to buying the boat but miss it big time, especially when the surf's up a bit and I can't get a float. Miss the night session too, anyhow looking to re-kit and was wondering which is the better option Turbo or Mag, first advantage I see is the Turbo is cheaper.

Owned the Turbo previously, all advice welcomed.

have 3 original 7hts, ive only used a turbo for a few casts, but have 3 mags and have a 4th on the way. sold my 6500 mags as im that impressed with the 7ht mag for my clean ground fishing.

Just ordered a mag for my clean ground fishing, is there any issues using it on rough ground.

I have an original 7ht and a mag and definately would go for the mag (great fishing reel)
You'll probably get away with some light rough work with it from time to time though wouldnt use it for regular heavy work

Hey Robbie, for heavier beach work & rock work upto 20lb mainline the Penn 525 mag is hard to beat. For very heavy rock work, a Diawa Slosh 30 might be worth considering.

Most of my beach fishing will be on clean ground for this I have ordered a TDXS 129pm and 7ht Mag, I previoulsy owned a 129pm but regretably sold it. Occasionally I fish the rocks for species mostly ballans and was looking something with a little bit more back bone to pull them out of the snags.

The rod and reel for the rocks needs to pair up with the rod on clean ground also.

If you're looking for an occasional rock reel for wrasse etc I'd go the SL20. Fish slightly heavier line and cheapest option for quality reel. The SL20 with heavier line will also sort you out for the clean ground when it gets a bit heavier.

The best reel ive ever used is the 7ht mag, but as crab leg says they do sometimes give a bit of trouble going back into gear. Ive found this happens after fishing on sandy beaches where sand gets into the reel but ive found a good cleandown after ive fished a sandy beach has eradicated the problem.

Not all Donagh but if its wet (wet sand seems to get everywhere) or the reel falls in sand its a must.

i have just got one of these myself and have to say Im impressed with it, I see there are pinions available to strengthen the reels, are these a must? or will they be fine on clean ground without one

If it was me, i would have gone with the turbo, but i would say that because its my fav reel for hassle free fishing.

Although as others have said, a SL20SHA or a 525 Mag would do a better job of fishing for wrasse.

You made the right purchase on the rod though, those rods are fantastic.

ya i heard the same thing but when you get a good one its the best reel out there but it has no backbone at all.

how can you say it has no backbone at all, what probs have you had with it?

i got a doggie on the mag and i think i dosent reel it in smoother then the turbo

Ive had good fish on my 7ht mags bass and hounds and not a bother, also it casts like a dream once the reels are cleaned after every sesssion and serviced every once in a while they are the bizz.
