Landing Net : Buy Or Dont Buy

Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:01 pm

Hi,
I am fishing for bass, salmon and sea trout. Do I need a landing net. If so WHAT MAKE AND ONE.
I am starting fishing for bass and sea trout at the bottom of my garden soon so I need to get my gear together.

Hi Fabregas

From the point of sea bass i got a landing net about a year ago but find that generally i do not use it, i had gotten an extending one that i doctored a little bit, i added on a strap on the shaft of it so that i could sling it over my shoulder and quickly release it when needed. I find that most places we fish have convenient landing spots at hand, so that you can concentrate on the fish solely rather than trying to get the net ready.

Hi Faregas

When i am wading and spinning/lure fishing for bass once i have a hook up i always start making my way back to the shore while playing the fish so that i land the fish on the shore if you are going to stay in position at the depth you are wading i would then keep a landing net slung on your shoulder the way that you can get to it easily, the net that i have is a Shakespeare with an extending handle. The one thing that i would be really carefull of is don't over load yourself with gear, when spinning/lure fishing be as mobile as possible and have the gear close at hand

Hi Faregas

The net should do fine for Salmon and sea trout as well as bass, have to say it's great to see that you are using the life jacket, this is an essential bit of kit,

until that 20lb salmon or 10lb bass gets off and your thinking if i had a net i had a chance at that

I'd definitely go for a net. Fishing off rock ledges or off boats it's a fairly handy bit of kit but as for wading and trying to land a fish in any depth of water i'd call it essential.

Fair point John but rod and line dose the job for me in my fishing situations, mabey use a net in the boat for landing a big fish but any fish from the shore i can handle with my hands or the trusty boga grip...

but you often see trout fisher men on tv programs using nets catching 1lb or 2lb fish with nets, cant see the point really each to thier own.... And i really hate the way a liveyl fish rolls around in the net getting caught up with the trebble hooks which more often than not injur the fish,

I would recommend that you buy a net. Get the best one you can afford. The cheaper ones tend to break / become unreliable and can refuse to open when you need them most.

My net is a Sharpes Seaforth Sea Trout which is hinged and has a telescopic handle. It will deal with fish up to and exceeding 20 lbs.

Most nets come with a spring clip similar to that on a pen. If you attach a D ring to your fishing jacket between your shoulder blades you can carry the net there. It is safely stowed out of the way behind you when not in use and can be unclipped with one hand when you are ready to net your fish.

Tight lines.
