Re Clipped down rigs

Hi Lads,

Having a wee bit of bother, have made up a few clipped down rigs for distance fishing and the problem that i am having is that at times either one or both of the clipped downs are not releasing and when you reel in they are still clipped down what am i doing wrong !!!!!!!!!

it could be a number of things. what set up/components are you using on the rig?

It is a 2 hook rig that i use at distance. I make these up with crimps, beads, swivels and for the clip i use the black clip downs (I think that they are the breakaway ones) that have the black tubing around the top. I usually put a knot and a small bead above the clip down.

try using the gemini srt springs they are great for clip downs, a bit expensive for what you get but ive yet to find an alternitive for them, anyone out there know where i can get these CHEAP? lol

I dont think you can beat cascade swivels and impact leads personally..

each to their own but i wouldn't use those black ones from breakaway myself. cascade swivels are much neater and less messy. use an impact lead, an imp with them. these are designed to push the hook out on impact with the water. sometimes casting low and hard can sea a rig not unclip. aim high so the rig drops down into the sea at less of an angle. you dont need an srt spring. an alternative to them is a short lenght of silicone tubing- much cheaper too(if you really think you need them). lots of anglers dont use srt springs and put baits out big distances with no trouble. a smooth cast is kind on rigs and dosent bend soft wire hooks or stretch hooklenghts. some lads reckon srt springs help stop hooks bending under strain or for picking up the slack on snoods after they have been stretched- adjustable mono stopknots will do this and more accurately too.

Hi mate. I've used the breakaway clips you're talking about with no trouble. Have moved on to the mustad wire type ones now though.

I've found that when the trace hits the water you need to allow it to go slack. You don't need to let out loads of line as this can cause it's own problems. When the line slackens the snoods should release from the clips.

and dont have ur rigs to tight or they wont open
