Im a multi man myself but recenty started using a 15 ft fixed spool continental style rod for some of my fishing. The fox stratos and the diawa basia are both excelent reels ive had a look at both and the only thing that put me off was price, I use a diawa emcast and find it very good at a fraction of the price. The shimano ultegra is alsi a great reel, few mates have it and love it.

i am not going to go to a basia or the dearest of the shimano areo technimum reels for what i want it for.some thing that does the job well with spare spool.

Shimano Biomaster 8000 xsa comes with 3 spools 5000 6000 and 8000. i got mine from sportfish uk for 78 sterling. have tried a good few fs reels theses are class robust searched high and low but worth the wait.

Recently bought a 15ft Emcast but only used it once. It will only be used occassionally at certain venues fishing matches need to get used to the different style. Certainly seemed to cope with picking up pout and whiting in atrocious conditions.
I teamed mine with a Shakespeare Salt reel to load with braid. Put some backing mono on to bulk out the spool and 200m of 20lb braid and used a tapered leader and seems to be fine. Quite a nice smooth reel so far for the money, paid £25. Hope this helps.

if its for fishing the beaches up here john personally i would go with a shimano, the ultegra 5500 seems big enough for most of the work, though some may prefer a bigger reel, i use aerlex 8000gt's normally or sometimes an ultegra 12000xt on the fixed spool rods, tempted by one of the 5500's though, damn nice wee reel.

You should try a Daiwa entoh tournament 5500, it's an older model but alot stronger than most current shimano's in the price range. Alot of dealers seem to be selling them at 30-40% discounts because it's older stock. Has a retrieve of about 85cm/turn.
I sold my ultegra XSA's for one of these, very happy with the performance.
