Question about the casting weight of a rod.

Hi

I have been looking at rods, specifically Shakeaspeare salt MX, but my question applies to all rods.

This rod like others specifies a lower casting weight of 4oz. What will be the consequence on casting and usage if I actually use a 2oz weight ?

If I intend using a 2oz weight should I only be looking at rods that specify 2oz in their casting weight ?

Also, a lot of rods like the MX in their blurb say they are a 'multiplier' rod. Does this mean you can't use a fixed spool reel with them ?

Thanks for any advice.

Flynnboy,

As far as I know the difference between multi rods and fixed spool rods are that the multi rods eyes are lower to the blank and smaller. The first eye is called the stripper I think and on a fixed spool would be quite a bit bigger due to the way the line comes off the reels in loops. You could use a multi reel on a fixed spool rod better from what I remember reading somewhere.

If you are only looking to cast 2oz you would probably be better with a rod that casts 1-3oz. You could still cast 2oz with a 4oz rod but it would not load the rod getting it to bend during the cast and not give you as good a distance.
