Daiwa Emcast

Anyone got any views on these reels? I got the 5500 sport a couple of months ago and I'm not sure if I've blown my money. The paint's rubbed off a number of bits of it and it makes a kind of grating sound now it's loaded with braid with mono backing, it seemed ok when it was loaded with purely mono.

Sounds as if you just got some sand inside it.

If that's all that's wrong, a screwdriver, old toothbrush, some white spirit and fresh oil will soon get it running smoothly again.

Thanks for the advice. Had a look at the reel again today, before I took it all apart I stuck the other spool of mono on and the strange noises disappeared. Unless it's a spool problem I'm back at square one. Is it just the lack of stretch in the braid adding extra stresses?

However, I'd say its actually a spool problem rather than the line loaded on the spool.

I would thoroughly check the spool you have loaded with braid to ensure that it is fully clean inside/underneath, then re-fit it.

If that doesnt work, maybe try taking the line off the spool altogether, then re-fit and see does it make any difference....if it doesnt make a difference, ie even without the braid on the spool its still not functioning correctly, then maybe its just a bad fitting spool......if it does cure the problem, then you know its the braid

id say the washers underneath the spool have been moved around or put back on incorectly, had the exact same problem now fixed. with an emcast sport btw

I have an emcast 5000, I highly recommend it for potential record monkfish. Making funny noises ever since that though

Decent enough reel but any kind of a dunking kills them. Nightmare to take apart and get back together for cleaning purposes although the same could be said of most fs reels I suppose.

Have the same reel myself ! Ended up buying a new reel, If the Emcast hit's the sand at all and you dont have another reel with you you might as well pack up and go home. Its hard to take apart , grind's if it gets a little bit of sand on it .
