Penn PowerStix Pro Surf 13'

Tue Jan 27, 2009 11:04 am

Hi guys,

At the moment I'm using a very very cheap Shakespeare beach-caster.
I bought it 7 months ago and I managed to caught lots of fish (including some decent bass).
The rod is now falling apart and I'm thinking to change it with something better.

I saw in on a UK site the following rod Penn PowerStix Pro Surf 13', there is a combo (rod + Penn Surfmaster 850) for around 135 euro, not sure about the shipping (maybe another 25 euro).

What do you think lads? Decent rod and reel? Good price?
Maybe I should spend a little bit more and get something else

Thanks

Diego

Thanks Wayne, I'll probably just get a new rod for around 150 euro and keep the old reel.
I'll check a few web sites.

the Penn Surfmaster 750 and 850 are meant to be very poor reels. i read a few reviews online about them and didnt really see anything good about them. i was gonna buy an 850 and was warned against it. i was told to look for the older Penn Surfmaster 70 instead. i checked online and couldnt find one but found the 60 in a local shop. i was told that the only difference was that the spool was a little bit smaller than the 70. im happy enough with it. no major problems with it but the line can get stuck under the spool sometimes when its slack like when im pulling it up through the rings to set up the rod. other than that i like it. i saw the 70 model on ebay a few weeks ago for £50 but not sure about P&P for it.

I have the 70 also and use it all the time, its a great wee reel. When I'm setting up the rod i losen the tension screw and bring the line through the bail arm.

I had the old powerstix and loved it and actually ragin i sold it. I picked up a penn affinity for £75 second hand. have a look around your fishing shop and see if there is anything about

I have the Penn power stix mated with a Gravel Zuse and i cant fault it) just ask pete as he tried to out cast me with all his FANCY gear and COULDNT      I think i paid about €150 for the rod (when sterling was high) from Dan in halfway Angling 00353 86 3357334 and i really cant fault the rod.

You can spend a fortune on rods/reels but at the end of the day will they catch you more fish ?????

I totally agree on this, my current beach caster is a "el cheapo" rod and I caught enough fish to support this theory

Thanks ROADRUNNER for your feedback, much appreciated.
