GPS locator /emergency services?

(Not sure if this is "tackle", but its some kind of related kit anyway).

A friend of mine sadly died in mountains in California a few months back (http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_10667743?nclick_check=1) and all the hoo-ha about the rescue and his GPS emergency personal locator and the fact I was thinking about him now its Xmas got me wondering - do we have such a service in Ireland? I.e., can you buy a GPS locator here that will call some emergency service if you get into trouble transmitting the coordinates? Maybe the smaller country here means a mobile phone would be as handy, but I could see some uses for it if you didn't know the local area too well and you were in a real bad way and couldn't dial for help etc.

Comments welcome.

Sorry to hear about your friend, but yes it is possible to buy plb's (personal locator beacons) which you can use in ireland, they use the same gps technology that epirb's on boats use. http://www.pilotshop.ie/index.html?lang ... =d142.html
