Was reading about Jack Shine RIP (
http://www.irish-trophy-fish.com/articles/kevinl.htm) and was reminded - the Alvey reel - anyone ever used one of these? Can you buy them in Ireland?
http://www.alveyusa.com/products/index.phpI think they used to be called Scarborough reels in the old Sea Angler magazines from the 70's I still have under my bed, but I've never seen one actually used (or even in a tackle shop) in Ireland. Might be fun to try one, but it looks kinda heavy and you need a rod to suit it....

me too. i think i'll order one and a rod to match and pick them up when i'm back in the US in Feb.
from what I can glean from web postings, if you want to do any serious casting, you need a rod to match it. since i've only multiplier-ringed rods, feeding a spiralling line through those rings off a 6 inch diameter reel just ain't gonna do it....

The Alvey's are popular in the Northern part of Australia as their low maintenace nature makes them easy to use from the beach , If you get sand on them you just rinse them off in the surf. They have brass, stainless steel and fiberglass construction. The only drawback is that they are prone to line twist due to the casting method and you need to use good swivels on the rig and must make sure that the main swivel joining to the line does not exceed the line diameter as this stops them working properly.
