Howye,

was thinking of gettin a new tripod. The one I have in mind is the new mti one. looks the biz. Any opinions?

i dont know i have a mustad one and it is a good one.

i have both and the mustad one is very bulky and a lot more tiresome to manouvre - mind you going for huss on rocks etc. id have more confidence in the mustad one

so what about the mti tripod versus the ian golds one. what is the prob with the mti one. has anyone used it. Need to know this before i can decide.

i haven't used it but i did a quick read up on it and i wouldn't go for it because its heavier, it has telescopic legs and i have never seen a tripod with these that hasn't seized/jammed at some point and lastly because its more expensive(at retail anyway)

and i doubt very much that there is anything wrong with it exactly but the ian golds ones are popular for a reason.

Thanks. So just to add to the debate, wot about the salt ones as another option besides the golds one. I have no problem with the golds ones - already have one. Just considerin somethin else this time.

I am a little bias but I hope still honest....I read a comment on one forum regarding the MTI that said you dont need to hang a bag of rocks from the MTI tripod to make it more stable and the Golds one you do, but with the MTI its like carrying a bag of rocks with you all the time.

The Salt tripod got terrible reviews because the first batch got recalled due to screws breaking and it seems to suffer from rusting quite bad.

Both of the above are only copies of the Golds tripod....Ian address's any and every problem there has ever been and still cares enough to listen and act on a problem, his tripods are made by his staff in his own factory in the UK....the other 2 are both made in China.....if you buy either and have a problem...think about it....need I say more

great, i asked my sister for a tripod for christmas and she got me the shakespeare salt one. i havent used it yet but it does feel a little bit heavy but it looks fairly sturdy. the cups and top holder need to be taken off when your packin it up which might be a pain in the arse in the dark. on the plus side it comes with a decent looking bag which will also hold my 2 rods when im heading to a mark.

had an ig solid tripod and wanted a telescopic to get it in the car boot so got a shakesphere salt. no bad bad it seems to have a lot of plastic bits (mainly aluminium) and the cut edge on the spike is very sharp, i cut myself in southside looking at it. its been used less then 10 times and is going strong but one false move (heavy haNDED MOVE) and the plastic gets it. it does come in a good bag. after i got it i saw ig does a tele and if its like the solid one...bingo.

I got the Ian Gold's telescopic stand, after about two years the the plastic screws on it that tighten the legs one completely snapped off while another one twisted off also (square tighteners). it was a good rod stand and i don't know anywhere that may fix it, my dad also had an older type different plastic bits (oval shaped tighteners) for tightening the legs he has it the last 6years and is as good as the day as he got it. but other people have not have had any problems with them as everything some people have trouble most don't. I also find them a bit light in the wind i have used rocks in a bag to keep it standing in windy days.

I got a Team Daiwa one for chrimbo seems preety good plastic cups though so maybe not for rock marks its a little bulky but not overly heavy and cheap too 55 euros i think. ( i wonder how long we can keep the "i got it for chritmas" line going hopefully till april anyway)

Just to throw in another suggestion into the mix, have you looked at the Craig Parker Pro tripods? Unlike many other tripods, the Craig Parker tripods have all metal brackets, cups etc, but yet they are still quite light. My one just arrived yesterday so I haven't got a chance to test it out properly yet but first impressions are pretty good, It looks like a very sturdy and robust bit of kit and it only cost me about €40 - €50 with the exchange rate. I was going to get the Ian Golds one but then I saw these ones and decided I'd try one instead. The only slight niggle I have with it is that I didn't realise that the front legs are adjustable, I would have preferred solid ones but that's my own fault because I didn't read the description properly.

The Parker is a copy of the Ian Golds tripod circa 1990/92, Parker wont spend the extra to get the molds made and use ABS plastic, and the aluminium he uses is not as good quality as Ian Golds uses......if the Parker was better then why do twice as many anglers throughout Europe buy the Golds tripods
