Best mutliplier for a beginner

I am hoping to get a AA6+ soon and was thinking of taking the step of changing to a multiplier rod and reel but i am not sure what reel would be best for me to start off on?

I would recommend a Daiwa 7ht original (black one) very forgiving reel and difficult to blow it up (Birds nest/crack off/overrun) when set up correctly. And can be picked up very cheap when you look around.

The key is if possible to try a few different reels and get a feel for them, different people like different style of multipliers. For example I dislike multis with magnet brakes as I just end up taking them out but thats just me.
You would be better off with a magnet based when starting out for the first time in the world of multis.

My first multiplier was a mag elite. Very forgiving on casting and easy to use, so I'd recommend that.

have to say the green mag elite ,got mag brakes and brake blocks and if set up properly near impossible to blow up.start with the mag brakes full on ,until you get used to it and then slowely decrease the mags as you get used to the reel ,you will find your own comfort zone when you are used to the reel.

Have to agree with Danny M. there,

I am new to the ways of the multiplier myself, bought a couple of cheap 7HT's on ebay (one hasnt turned up yet mind you ), if your patient like I was you'll pick them up for under €45 each for one in good nick, but aint too expensive brand new either if ya shop around.

I havent birdied my yet....Oops, thats tempting fate

I must say though, I havent used any other multi's yet so couldnt comment on their suitability for a beginner, but the 7HT is very easy to use.

i started with an abu got a few birdies with it but it wouldnt have mattered if i started with a 7ht cause when your only learning your bound to get a few. im using multipliers around 10 years now and i still get them. but i use both the 7ht and the abu 6500 c3 high speed the abu is a better fishing reel i can cast further reel in quicker and its a lot smoother and thougher that the 7ht turbo but saying that the 7ht is a much easier reel to use it casts great also and if there is a big on shore wind its the one i use just cause i dont have to worry about an over run during the cast. so if i was you i would go with the 7ht which ever model you can afford and just remember practice makes perfect no shame in getting birdies. unless its during a comp

Not bulky at all.

I would suggest you find a good local angling shop and call in to have a look at some reels.

Any decent shop would have the new model 7HT's in stock, and I'm sure the newer models would be the same size as the original 7HT.

At least this way you can get a feel for the size/shape of a few different reels before making a decision.

The abu 6500's and the 7Ht are both fairly compact reels in my opinion.

Just a thought, I'm sure if you contacted a few of the guys in your local area they'd have a variety of reels, I'm sure you could meet up with a few guys to give the reels a bit of a road test.

6500 MagElite or 7ht both good reels, a tip for a beginner....step up the line diameter until your used to the reel...like 20lb instead of 15lb, this will mean less distance but less birdies, until you find your way with the reel, then drop the line down, it works!

i have had and broke most reels so imho the diawa 7ht mag is the best for a beginer a bit on the expensive side but you wont go wrong straight from the box its ready to use i have not had any issues casting mine

7ht mag all the way, ive never seen anyone birdie it, dbrock off the site is giving 4 away the last time i heard

sorry cant add anything different than above has to be the 7ht i started on the orig black took out off box loaded line and away it went.

i was bidding on a sl20sh last night on eBay, it looked like a good reel. It finished this morning at 0815 and i lost out by 89p, GUTTED, i wish i had got up now before it finished.

slosh 20s can be a nightmare to cast stay away from them when your learning. have you considered keeping the fixed spool option open and maybe splashing out on a new one. a lot of anglers use them for scratching and hitting distances alike

Ye thats probably the best advice on this posting rather than spend a weeks/months trying to perfect your casts with a multiplier have a look into whats out there with regards to fix spools no doubt that option would see you get big distance casts sooner when your happy with your distance on the fix spool then try for the multiplier. no point in rushing into a multipier you should build the basics up of casting first

Very good advice, as I can hit 120/130 yards easy with my fixed spool and its not an expensive setup. My beachcaster and f/s only cost me around €100 all in, so its not the best gear in the world. I can still bang it out though

One thing I would say....

I have recently got a few multi's, and to get the hang of them, I'm simply using them for my close in fishing, well anywhere upto 80 yards or so I guess, 3 hook flapper mostly, but atleast i'm gradually getting confident with it. I'm still using my f/s spool for my distance fishing, but will fish them the other way around once I'm capable/confident to hit better distance with my multi.

Hi ady, i made the switch about 12 months ago to a multiplier set up. Going on advice i didn't go mad and i bought a Ron Thompson multiplier that cost about €50. It was a great starter reel as i put it through hell when i started as i had never used a multiplier before, plus it also left me know if i wanted to continue with a multiplier without costing an arm and a leg,
am still learning but am using a slosh20 now and it is great...

Still always keep a fs set up in the kit..
