Fixed Spool Suitable for Supercast???????

Tue Sep 23, 2008 1:17 pm

Ive just gotten a Penn Surfmaster 750 to use with my Supercast STS115 (11'6 Bass Rod) but I really dont think ive made the right choice. When compared to using the rod with my Millionaire multiplier the rod is pretty heavy. The reel really isnt doing the rod justice. Can anyone recommend something more suitable????? Ive been looking on various auction sites etc but its very hard to couple a reel with a rod when your just looking at photos of the reel and you dont have an idea of the weight or dimensions of it.

hello mikeQ, the reel i would opt for would be the 6000 sized
shimano baitrunner ,its certainly lighter than the big penn , but
still has guts enough for bass fishing,

Cheers Steve,

Been using the Shimano 6000 and also the 5000 for quite some time for salmon and always found it a fantastic reel. Have you used one sea fishing?? I love my baitrunner and all but I dont know if it would handle 3-4oz leads and all the heavy pulling and dragging that goes on when fishing beaches. Most of the beaches that i fish tend to be quite clean but when there happens to be any weed around its normally a tug of war session. The spool really isnt meant to hold 250 yds plus of line either on the shimano, something id really like the reel to do. It seems a shame that we dont have access to the wide range of fixed spool reels that are availabe and specifically desinged for saltwater fishing!!!! Ive seen people in various programmes using some reels that I would consider perfect for the job but trying to get access to them here is nearlly impossible. Ordering them in is always a possibility but I like to pick a reel up and have a good fiddle with it before i spend the cash and thats were the internet falls down. The touchy feely aspect. Photos tend to either make things look much better than they are or vice versa!!!

i use the 6000 shimano baitrunner in the sea regulary, especially
when spinning with heavy lures etc, will handle 3and 4oz on clean
beaches, but if youre fishing against weed, its a bit under-gunned,
would go for its big brother 8000 baitrunner re model or gt, these
reels are very well priced, can be picked up on various auction sites
at really good prices would certainly be light enough and strong enough
for the job no problem,

regards steve.

have you tried the shimano ultegra, i have 1 in the 5500 size its great for the sand ,float fishing, plugging .you get 2 metal spools ive loaded 1 with 30lb imax braid (.20)had to put 100yds of 20lb mono for backing then 300yds of the braid, the other spool must hold about 350yds of 15lb mono.its got the bait runner system but at the front with the drag.

the shimano ultegra is a cracking reel, but way up in price compared

The 8000 was the reel I was considering!! Im a bit disgusted I didnt just go for it straight away but again I couldnt find one anywhere to look at!! The Ultegra however is in a different class altogether and a beautifull reel to use although as you say weaverboy - a bit of an investment!! But for good reason I suppose. The line lay, capacity, baitrunning system etc are all superb with it. Im a complete tackle tart anyway and I can find justifiable reasons for having all three reels in my cupboard!! I love my supercast sooooo much though im just looking for "the one" lol. Light enough not to mess up the the very light supercast but strong enough for the job in hand!! Im doing alot of bass fishing and I want something special cos bass fishing is the primary reason I sea fish at all!!!! That and winter cod fishing!! Been using the Surfmaster quite a bit last week and had a few nice fish on it, one lovely 6lb bass which the reel handled with no problems, as was expected - but it is a bit on the heavy side. Thats my only complaint. Perfect on a 13-15 footer, not so perfect on the supercast!!
