Old versus the new abu multiplyer reels

For all round performance which would you guys prefer the older versions or the new reels for casting ?

Are the swiss made reels better ?

I have a heap of both types and if tuned properly there wont be much in it, obviously the older ones feel alot more solid and IMO have better quality parts,i use some older ones on the casting court for the heavier leads and as they hold alot more line, i also use some as my practice reels down the beach.. 1980/1981 ansd still going strong...

Don't think there is a lot in it for the top end 6500 reels but still prefer the last generation green mag elites. The older 7000 reels (made in sweden) are far better in my opinion though. I have a new 7000 and only used it once. A common prob seems to be the line getting caught behind the spool, reel seems slow too. It does feel well made though.

I have always sworn by Abu reels but recently bought two Shimano Torium 14's for uptide and rough shore work. They are fantastic reels. Other than 6500 size reels I would not buy abu again until the quality improves (the new 6500 is made in china too i believe).

The new 6500 c3 CT Mag and 5500 c3 CT Mag are made in Sweden and they are the top spec reels ever made by Abu, these are the ones that replaced the Green MagElite, they have the Gun Metal grey side plates...they're the top of the Abu range now.

Your right about the Swedish made Black 7000C being a fantastic reel, I still have about 6 in mint condition, the Chinese ones are crap and not fit to have the Abu name on them.

There are two new models due out later this year called "Torros" one is about a 6500 size and the other a 5500 size, they are built on the same lines as the Revo STX, so they come from a good stable anyway....I have a couple of each booked already :)

Depending on how much line they hold, they should be good for the 100g at least :)

i have a couple of old type 6000c black models, bearings located in
the end caps, still run superbly, can be cast over grass especially the
heavier leads, without any brake-blocks , certainly will cast as well
as the newer models, 175 and 200 especially.

I have both old and new abu's and there isnt much in it..but as regards the new 525 mags....well..lets just say i wont be buying those again...complete rubbish...I had so many problems with my new xtra i'd be here all night listing them off....cant beat the original

Couldn't agree more mate. I am now starting to look for a few of the originals to have as backup.

The old shimano speedmaster was a great reel tsm11cfs was the model no i think the model without the "c" had no brakes . 6-1 steel gears aswell . Find a few clean ones on ebay uk . Buy only the mint ones they will go for more money but worth it.

Most of the older abus had slow gear ratios thats what makes the speedmaster more desireable for fishing !

Guys, you have shocked me. I only ever thought, that ABU multiplier reels, were made, with good quality, Swedish, engineering. When did the "made in China ", thing happen.

your right andrew the model is the shimano speedmaster 2c with brake blocks and manual drag system, dont like the ones with the fighting star drag but that is just a personal thing.but they are cracking reels and you can still get them if you look on places like e bay and parts can still be purchased from shimano based in wales.
