Which rod?

I am lookimng to buy a new boat rod and have shortened the choice down to Fladden maximus or penn powerstick.Anyone had any experience of either of these? Most of my fishing will be into maximum depths of 150-200 feet but I want a rod capable of using over 300 feet.Any feedback appreciated.

I have used a Penn (Jarvis Walker) tuff stick 12-20lb. Are they the same blank as a power stick? It is a lovely rod with a beautiful action. The only down side would be I felt the handle was on the thick side.

If you fish often enough to justify it, buy either the 12-20 or 20-30 Penn Tidecutter or a Abu Suveran 12-25. Each rod will bully any fish you want but have lovely soft tips.

I'm not really into boat angling. But for what it's worth I've sold lots of these:-

Penn Mariner 6' 6" 15 - 30lb. Lovely action well it's a Penn
Calypso Blue Fin 6' all roller deep sea Rod 30 - 80lb. sold lots of these.
Daiwa Beefstick 5' 6" 50 - 130lb stiff action Throw 10 oz's no problem.

Blue Fin's the one. Problem is I can't get enough of them.

Penn powerstick are being sold off cheaper at the moment as I presume they'll be changing the rods names.

Jim,

Do you use the Suveran 12 - 25 for your wreck fishing? Will it cover most of your wrecking needs, gilling, pirking and congering?

What kind of weight can you comfartably send down with that lb class rod?

Cheers

Here's my take on it:

(In no particular order of preference) :D

Shakespear UglyStick Model 1480 15lbclass.

NorthWestern 12 lb (If you can find it!)

ABU Suveran 12-20.

Any one of the above will cover 95% of my general fishing, excluding Sharking, Congering and Uptiding. (Though come to think of it, I have happily uptided with the UglyStick).

If you're serious about Congering you should seriously consider a rod in the 30 - 50 lb class range. Know which I'd prefer if I had a big snottie tugging my line!

Colm,
The brother uses the Suveran. Make no mistake it's an incredibly strong rod. The tip is flexible but the butt has huge lifting power. He generally will only use it for wrecking as its just too powerful (as distinct from stiff) for the normal scratching. He has had congers to 55lb ling to well over 30 not to mention coalies to 30 and cod to 30. Enough said about the Suveran! I think the Tidecutter is a similar action but has a far superior handle arrangement. There is no screw above the reel seat which is a blessing for shadding and general reeling in.

My favourites at present:

Diawa Sealine 8lb (Penn 525)
Penn Tidecutter 12-20 (Slosh 30 or Abu 7000)
Penn Tidecutter 20-30 (Shimano calctta 700)

I also may carry a Shimano AeroUptide. And I have great craic with a little 6' baitcaster. I'm going to get a Tidecutter 6-12 shortly to complete the trio!!!
Jim.
