zziplex rods query

Just a quick question regarding the compatibility of zziplex rods in general been compatible with fixed spool reels.Would the ring size make a big differance or would the action be totally differant to a rod specific for fixed spool use.
The reason i ask is im toying with the idea of throwing a big dirty auld fixed spool onto my profile just for a change due to a few birdies on the last few outings,ive had a reel seat fitted so it should be feesible from that point of view,just querying the overall suitability with the rod itself.Any views welcome.

my mate has a profile and was fishing a penn 850 fixed spool on it. he didnt have a problem with it. but in saying that he now has learned to use his multi and he is casting much better. my advice is perservere with the multi to get the best out of the rod, bet you wont look :) :)

its more to do with the positioning of the rings man, ive had fixed spool on multi rods before, made little to no difference, just looked a bit odd lol

the bigger rings and number of rings on a fixed spool rod allow the line to flow freely from the fixed spool reel.the multiplier rod has smaller rings and chokes the flow from the fixed spool more.bottom ring on a fixed spool rod is usually about 50mm to top one 20mm and on a multiplier rod 30mm to top one 12 mm.its all to do with the coils of line from the fixed spool reel flowing freely. cheers john

Beachcaster is correct. It is the size, number and spacings of the rings that dictates whether a fs or multi should be used not necessarily the rod type. With a fs the large coils get caught in the smaller multi rings. First ring on fs should be about 50mm whilst on multi should be 30mm or so.

While it may be the case that large rings are the accepted norm for fixed spool, if using braid then the smaller multi rings may actually be better. If you look at the latest generation of continental style rods you'll see that many are being fitted with Fuji low rider rings. They are supposed to improve distance over wide rings. Something to do with the Ohmura cone theory, published by Rintaro Ohmura the president of Fuji (don't ask :) ). Speaking from my own personal experience I would say that small rings are slightly better for braid. Maybe its the with the way braid seems to come off the spool in tighter loops compared to mono.
