Also could you help me with the following:-

1. Best Abu 7000 to buy
2. Best Abu 6500 to buy.
3. I have ZZippy profile on the way - any good?
4. Spinning/lure rod/reel to buy (or will 9ft rod + baitcaster do)
Good lures for pollack/bass around Kerry.

Hi treeman,

I'll give you my opinion on the Q's below.

best 7000... Haven't a clue mate. Never used one.

Best 6500... The Mag Elite. Magnetic breaking and the Flordia Orange looks the biz.

From what I hear on this site the profile is a cracker

Spinning Rod.... I'd stick with the profile Mate. If you wanted some lighter, the 10 or 11 foot spinning rod would be better as you will be trying to bully crash diving Pollock away from the rock and kelp and a 11 foot rod give you more reach over the ledge you will be fishing off.

Spinners..... There are so many.
Quilty catchers and Tobys are great all rounders.
Get yourself some Tempest black Sandeels... I have found these excellent for Pollock in Kerry. Quilty Sandeels are a very good second, especially if the water is very clear. The the usual small shads and fire tip worms will always get you a few.

If I remember anything else I'll let you know.

Kevin

Thanks Kev - very useful. If I use profile from rocks will a 6500 be man enough? Or should I use 7000 loaded with 30lb or so?

profile:

i have only had mine about a month now and all i can say about it is.... OMG i dont think you can get a better rod.. between the weight and the diameter of the blank it makes beach casting a whole new sport, you can easily stand with the rod in hand and wait patiently for the fish without worrying about the weight of the rod causing strain on your arms.

And with the blank diameter being thinner than most rods casting it can be done with relative ease, it cuts through the air and is well capable of casting a 5oz lead with a big bait to the horizon (whether the person casting is able is a different story)

And to top it all off it comes in equal sections so transporting is a bit easier than some other zzippy's with 7' and 8' sections.

so all in all... you have a good rod coming to you... best of luck with it :D

hi here is what i think, as regards the reels try the abu 6500ct hi speed red one , or any abu mag elite . cracking reels . also yhe 7000 type reels abu have a new one out with level wind but a bit bulky for shore fishing. as for the profile my mate has one and i had a cast with it have to say the best rod out there. then the spinning gear go for a 11ft great for hitting lures that little bit further. lures themselves too many to name try a load of different ones......

mine is set up with a mag525 loaded with 15lbs, so far i have used it off beaches and piers, but dont let the rod deceive you. After a few casts you will feel the power that this rod is capable of. My other rod (zziplex 3500s) which i have had for over a year now has become my second rod of use, the profile has that extra bit of 'je ne sais quoi', and the 3500s had brought in a double shot of ray many a times with relative ease so i cant imagine how easy its going to be bringing in monsters on the profile, but i'd say it will be well up for it...

so to answer your question, i'd say it will have no problem fishing off rocks, treat it right and it will do you well, as for reel and line you'll need something with good cranking power and high retrieve rate so either a mag525 or sl20sh loaded with 15lbs-20lbs should see you right..

hope this helps...( and i'm not even getting any royalties  )

The profile is a fantastic rod, but its not a rock end rod, however I dont think it would let you down what ever you catch on it.

IMHO the 7000 size Abu is way to big for the Profile, either a 6500 or a Daiwa 7ht would balance up better with a profile.

The best 6500 you can buy todate is the new Gunmetal grey 6500 C3 CT Mag, its a step forward from the MagElite and a far higher spec than the red High Speed 6500, the latter is to fast a retreive for heavy fish IMO.
