Any views on this multiplier?

its bigger than a 525 and will cast ok if its rough ground you fish or light boat work then this reel will do both

I'm looking at this as a possible replacement for my Penn 3/0 which gave up the ghost after many years of sterling service.

I recently took a look at the Okuma Magnatex 30. Nice reel to cast with for it's capacity and would be well suited to rought ground and the boat. It comes with level wind or without and is great value for money. Looks like it would handle pretty much anything.

Would be worth a look.

just a bit of info on the okuma magnetex.A few months ago i was looking for a similar type of reel for rough ground but capable of good distance with a fast retieve.Got incontact with veals and wanted to order the okuma but was advised against it as the guy i was talking to informed me that a lot of the reels they initially sold had been returned due to various problems.All this was told to me on a hush hush basis,but it was enough for me not to order the reel,so bear it in mind if you decide to take a serious look at it.
Forwhat its worth the penn mag525 would be a good option,fast and strong or the slosh30 would be a good option as well especially if you wanted to double up for a bit of light boat fishing.Good luck in the hunt.

funny that they are giving them away for 'free' with the imax rods now..go figure

I have the Magnetex 30 myself.... Not had a single problem with it. If you are fishing from the rocks the magnetic brakes are excellent at preventing overruns. This reel has a huge capacity as well. Gearing is fast and seems very strong...

The nice part is you should be able to pick one up for about €100 ish

Sean has had a 545 (mag!) for a good few years. He tends to use it for congering and sharking, the heavier stuff. It has performed as you would expect from the rest of the 5 Series reels: cast iron.

I take it it’s from the boat you are looking?

Hi Pat, have you considered having your (original black?) Penn 3/0 serviced? All parts except chrome outer rings are still available in the UK.

Thanks for the replies lads. I've been out of action for awhile so haven't had the chance to post. Yes, Jim I would intend using this reel for the boat & team it up with my TD2050 for congering, etc.,...I had someone look at my 3/0 but was out of luck as it is definitely Kaput.
