525 vs sl30sh

well after lumpy getting me all excited about fishing for bullhuss i decided i need a rough ground reel.

my tackleshop are offering me a trade in against an old boat reel that i havent used in a few years so i can either get a slosh 30 for €50 or one of the older model 525s for €65

the sales guy in the shop was telling me he has been using the slosh since 1988 and hasnt had any problems with it. he also said that the penn was a great reel but has no personal experience with it.

would i be better off with the daiwa or the penn

i have both if you want to cast any distance the penn will be the one ,the slosh 30 is stonger but not a true casting machine .both are good for heavy stuff like conger the slosh would be the man

i have both the 525 and the sl and shv sloshs and i would say the sl30 is by far a better reel over rough ground. had a good chance to compare both of them last sunday and the 525 was struggling over heavy ground while the sl30 took it at its ease...just seems to be a more powerful reel and the high retrieve rate is useful as well

I got slash 30 before xmas. she runs savage fast so be sure and tone down the bearings a bit to avoid the inevitable birdies

ya was aware its pretty fast alright. though 30lb line should make nests easily rectifiable

ya I loaded mine with 25 and she got a real test the fri after christmas on thye west kerry rocks. great real-stood up to storm, rough ground and plenty nice fish! pm 'Liamo' there cause he gave me this 80w90 motor oil which seemed to do the job, was sending 7and 8 pz across the gale and the retrieve was fantastic for lifting the end gear plus fish up over and ocassionally through the rock ledges in close-15foot swell made it dodgy like. few fish broke me off in the snoods but other then that the 25 was mighty for hawling thje rest in

i have the sl30 and a 525 and also an sl20..

to be honest the sl20 is just as beastly at bringing in fish out of the rough as the sl30 the main difference being the size, and the sl20 seems to cast smoother while distance casting..

i havent used the 525 much to be able to justify commenting on it, but if its huss your wanting to bring in the sl20 does the job just as well as the sl30

Slosh 30 all the way, I have the 20 & 30 and they are great haulers and can actually cast reasonably well.
To be fair the slosh's are fast enough (dont fill them up with line) and I have found i can do a decent cast with them if i need to.

ok i have the slosh30 and a 525, while both reels are great, if its rocks or real rough ground i reach for the slosh 30, the 525 is a great reel but for pure pulling power its the slosh30

525 is a better casting tool by far, but the slosh is my preferred reel purely for its crankability

and we know how cranky you can be eric :roll:

Slosh 20 & 30 are great boat reels as well, I have had the 20 for around 10yrs, only problem was having to replace one bearing and that was my own fault when tearing off and leaving the bait on the seabed, luckily the rod floated :lol:
I reckon Col runs out of clutch with his 525!! :wink:

the slosh 30 all the way great reel for rough ground and big fish,, the best tope reel from the shore ive found,,, also works amazing in the boat

this seems to have disappeared on me for a while...... dunno what happened cos even when i did a search by my posts or through the title it didnt show up.



opted for the slosh30 filled with 30lb trilene

Comparing the 525 with the SL30 is like comparing chalk and cheese. The 525 is best suited to 0.37 to .40mm where as the sl30 is for 30lb. The 525 would at most cope with .45. With .45 on mine without being an amazing caster I'd get down to the last with the line filled so the leader knot will just have clearance when fully reeled in. A fair comparison with the 525 is an SL20 and the 535 would be the fairer comparison to the SL30.

The build quality of the 525 is far superior and it needs much less looking after. Its is well able to crank and has a far more confortable handle than anything on the market. The main advantage of an SL20 is the price which makes me think it may be my next reel purchase. With my SL30 I use with red RF and two red break blocks and never found it fast. The main problem with the slosh reels running fast is with to thin a diameter line being used or guys who don't know what those funny plastic red and white things that come with them are and throw them out. I find the crank of the handle to large on the SL30 but that could be just because I mainly use the 525s. THough the SL30 is a fine reel.

used it today, just flicking double mackeral fillet baits, no problem wasnt aiming for distance but was easily hitting 50 yards with no effort.

on the retrieve i found it a doddle......... happy with my purchase

have to agree with Donagh there. the two reels are completely different the only thing in common they have is that both will handle rough ground fishing but thats were it ends.

have both reels paul the 525 i use mostly on the beach its, as you know a work horse rough ground is not a problem.

i use the slosh 30 on the boat especially uptiding its a great reel i have two of them infact. you got a good reel and if its looked after!! you will have it a long time. i have both mine at least 5 years and never had a single problem with them :wink:
