Hi lads, just looking for advice on a rod and mutiplier set up for a friend at work,He has never used a multiplier but wants to give it a lash. The budget would be around 350ish.The rod would be mainly be for clean ground casting 4 to 6ozs.
Prefarably good bite action and forgiving on miss casts and a multiplier that would be nearly foolproof if thats possible. All suggestions welcome, also would it be worthwhile buying in the uk at the minute or keep it at home.
Thanks

Daiwa Supercast and abu mag elite or daiwa 7ht....This is what I started with although I no longer use this rod except for mackerel bashing in the summer.

I just had a look through Veals and they have an Anyfish Anywhere 6+Bait 13ft and a Penn GS525 combo for about 280 Euros + p&p, Glasgow Angling have a Daiwa Sandstorm 13ft and a Daiwa SL30SH for about 230 Euros + p&p, Gerry's Fishing have a Grey's Triad with a choice of 6 reels for about 370 Euros + p&p.
The links are;

The way the Euro is doing against Sterling at the moment you can have some huge savings buying in Britain.
Best of luck

Avoid the 525GS and the Slosh 30 if you're looking for a forgiving multiplier. These reels are lively to say the least. If its clean ground you're over, you can pick up mag elites on Ebay and the like new for under a hundred euro, team one of them with a nice actioned rod, up to 14 feet or so and you will have a nice outfit. Off the top of my head, a Greys Triplex, Penn Viper or similar would sit nicely. Sandstorm isnt a bad rod for the money either to be honest although there are better out there.
Neither of those reels has mag brakes and would be more suited to boat work/Rough ground where distance isnt an issue than what you're looking for.

Sound Advice Pete,
The Mag 525 Extra should be looked at as well. They have an extra 2 magnets (6 in total) and should be very easy to start casting with when set on slow. IMO, they take much more abuse than the Abu's 6500's and have stronger gearing if you are fishing rock marks or heavy ground.

Hi all,
hanks for all the helpful advice. After much deliberation my buddy decided to go for the greys combo of a pz match and mag xtra.£189.99+£50 for the reel +20 for the p&p.It was that or the supercast pm,but he is happy to go for the option of the combo deal ,it seems good value for money and hopefully a set up that he can improve his casting etc with, and hopefully the match version should'nt be too stiff for his casting capabilities and cover most of the fishing situations that we come across on our adventures.
Thanks again, now i have to look forward to giving him very basic instructions onthe multiplier use but i have the utmost confidence in our mission, rather like the laurel&hardy show.
Cheeerio.

New lumpy?????
They're a grand reel IF one takes care of em . Have mine for years now (well over 5 anyway) .Sent it to Abu twice for overhaul and comes back like new.

Just as a matter of interest -
how much did that cost you including postage etc
Do you have an address or contact details - have a slightly abused & battered reel that needs some proper TLC.

hi John,
Send it off to Abu.
cant rem address but I DO have it here somehwhere and I mentioned it on a thread here somewhere too.
something like Pure Fishing (UK) Ltd,
Unit 5C
Crewe
Bristol....
But not sure I may look in my wallet for contact card.
Cost me only few euro to send package over.....The first time I sent it the mag slider on sports mag had broken....they fixed FOC.
A year later I sent it again because I had lost a bearing (must ave bin drunk while cleaning reel) lol and it needed an overhaul also....
Think they charged me 12pound sterling altogether..
As I say the reel is over 5 yr old and still in better condition than my orange premium which I have never sent over.
That one is next...but I think I neglected that one TOOO much.
hope this helps.
