Magnets or Brake blocks ?

Iv been using multiplyer's for the last 20 years and wondering whether the magnetic reels do actually make much of a difference of distance compared to the ones with the brakeblocks.

I was well able to cast a multiplyer with the blocks a long way without having much problems only now and again I had birds nests.

So I have come to the conclusion that the magnetic reels are more user friendly and better for beginners and the old school reels.

If you can use them they are a much better reel for casting as they dont slow down as fast as the magnetic reels and they have more of a nice sweet tune to them like an old sports car with a bit of grunt .

I love your example of the old sports car, i would have to say your correct to a line. Hard to beat the full grunt of a screaming engine, no EBS,anti lock brakes,no engine management systems.

The new reels are like this, mag brake this, alloy this, free spindles.aaaaagghhhhhhhhhhh. but.......

The reason we have a 70 mph speed limit is because a guy drove an AC Cobra down the M1 at blah blah blah.

An off the shelf car could now do the same thing,30years of engineering improved things.

so the new type reels are the same. A reel for everybody, that means take it out of the box and all can use it. hit a beach with a head wind and slow everything down, back wind and open it up.
.
So to answear your question.
If you can tell the diffrence in distance from a Mag to a Cent on a reel then your a better caster than me, but if you want control then pick the Mag.

mag reels just allow that bit more fine tuneing to the reel ,they can be backed of as the lead gets away,if you look at most top casters they all use mag reels of one kind or another.its a matter of getting the reel set up to suit your individual skill.roger mortimer uses the old abu reels with just blocks and oil to control the reel.but the top casters in the uksf all use mag reels of a kind it just gives that extra bit of control for those extra precious yards or even inches.cheers john
