I am considering buying a roddy 175 reel from Penn. What are your opinions? Could you recommend some same price alternatives?

Be careful, these reels are not made by Penn. They cost £16 in USA .What sort of endureing quality does one expect from a reel so cheap? Probably made in China. Penn permitted Jarvis Walker to endorse their spinning reels "By Penn" They cost Penn 75Pence each in India, sold by the trade for£7 and retailed at £14 not much more than the Roddy175 . I hope some of the 'baitcasters' on this Form shall advise you on your pucrhase as I do not like seeing anyone being sold rubbish. As a matter of interest it is almost impossible to obtain spares for this sort of Oriental made low value reels.

just a word of advice if you buy a cheap reel i can guarantee you after a couple of outings it will seize. If your willing to push the boat out and buy an expensive reel you will have it for a long time. eg. i got my penn mag a long time ago I've looked after it and its still in very good shape

i got one a good while ago from america. i couldnt believe a penn reel at this price. however the reel is made in china not america and you get what you pay for. on one of my first trips with it my buddy was passing my rod to me out of the boat and he dipped the reel in the sea. i rinsed it when i got home but the next day it was corroded and stiff. these reels are one of those types that are sold under many different names. i would not recommend them. if you do buy one open it up and grease it up well. also gears are plastic. more suited to freshwater fishing pike/trolling.

I got this reel on christmas eve from glasgow angling centre and it is not a penn product nowhere on the packaging or documentation does it mention anything to do with PENN. When I took it out of the box the drag was tightened right down and when I turned it it felt as though the bearing was knackered so my advice would be avoid this reel...
