I.....Want.....That....One.....!!!! That reel looks quite simply amazing. I have heard wonderful things about the Avets for boat use, how do they stand up to trouble free casting from the shore? Is the mag conversion easy enough to carry out or do you need to involve a pro?

I got two of those reels about 4 years back.....as far as value for money goes they are out on their own. I magged both of mine, it takes all of 10 minutes.

Here is a picture of the 3 sizes all magged....you just glue on a metal washer and then let the magnet hold to it....there is more than enough room inside.

Mine have the other style handle (like the 525) I like it better than the newer round one.

The engineering is precise but simple, they are bomb proof.

I timed the spool spinning on the table...I got bored of watching it after 7 minutes.

They had plans to bring out a star drag version, that seems to be shelved because they are flat out keeping up with demand for the lever models, at the price they have no equal, they went up about 20% last year (first increase in 4 years) and they are still best value on the market IMHO.

i fished beside a guy in the boat last year he had two avets very nice reels ,well impressed with them a lot of very good engineering in them.pity the guy who was using them was not up to much as an angler though,right [tom] only jokeing mate.!!!

I got my Avets direct from the Factory in the US, there is a guy in the UK selling them but I think it is cheaper to get them from the US shops (even with carriage) http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csrAvet.htm

Hi checked out the web site for avet reels u.s. based no prices on site reel looks good is there any breaking system at all, is mxl purpose built baitcaster?can,t really get info Ive never used anything other than abu

no breaks.....the lever drag itself is a break....thats why they magg it.Purposely build for jigging and bottom fishing(boat reel) but with a nice freespool.Tuff as a tank.90% machine alluminium.The latest model come in 2 speed.I dont think u want to use mxl....sx is way more than enuff for casting and with 20kg - 30 kg fish is a no problem.Lots of muscle.The only problem with this kind of one sided lever drag reel is it tend to become quite heavy to crank after passing the certain amount of applied drag(15lbs if not mistaken).Not only for this reel...but any other brand...even Torsa.But how many of us can stand to hold that ammount of drag??So not a problem....unless ur going jigging with it for a 40-50 kg GT.

I first seen Avet reels about 4 years ago, an American friend of mine had one and he was raving about it. He introduced me to one of the brothers who own Avet, they are anglers and designed those reels themselves.

These reels are designed for Tuna fishing on Party-Boats out of the west coast of the US. Unlike our charter boats these vessels cater for about 30 to 50 anglers at a time, all casting out to the schools of Tuna, fish that range from 40lb to 200lb plus.

The brother I spoke to was very knowledgeable about his side of our sport, but as I spoke of the needs of shore anglers, I may as well have been talking Japanese....they just don't understand why we need mags or why we prefer star drag over lever, although he did say they were working on a star drag model (this was 4 years ago) at the time, but its still not on their website.

IMHO the Avet reels are superb, the fact that they can be magged very easy makes then usable from the shore, having said that, I have not and probable will never use mine from the shore....up-tide fishing, they are the best, wrecking they will be fantastic, in our waters a true sharking reel, but as Tope seem to be the only sort after big fast moving species we go for I would sooner use an Abu 7000c type reel from the shore.

The two models I have are the SX and the MX both in brushed aluminum finish, I think the coloured ones look nice while new but would mark easy and look old quickly.

I know some distance (field) casters in the US have took the Avets over grass and not found them to be better than the Abu's. They have found their way into many tackle boxes on their merits in a big competitive market....says a lot for a little company in So-Cal run by a couple of anglers with a dream.

If you're comparing the SX and MX to ABU reels for size, which of the Avets would match up to the 6500 reel?

SX is the smallest size.But when put side to side with abu 6500 avet will look a bit taller/higher but narower.

Line capacity for the SX is 375yds-16lb and 220yds-20lb yet the size of the SX Avet is about the same as the Abu 5500. The MX will hold 360yds-20lb line and its smaller than an Abu 7000c or 7500c.

TBH its a fluke that Abu reels are used for shore angling anyways, they were originally designed as Salmon reels for the American steel-head anglers...I'm not knocking Abu reels, geezas! I've got enough of them and love them.

Most of the American shore anglers that I know who use Avets like the line capacity more than the casting distance...obviously Tarpon and Spinner Sharks can strip line off very fast and the Avet gives more edge than most other reels in this area, this with a lever drag plus the added winding power is a big bonus for them. IMHO we don't have the species to see the real benefits of this type of reel.....Tope is perhaps the only exception from the shore.
