HI Conor, there are so many different reels with varying prices out there that I would seriously advise you to tie up with the lads in The Ulster Casting Club before buying a reel. They will be able to advise you on the most suitable gear for all the fishing you are likely to participate in around the Ulster coast as well as giving good advice on casting. We have all bought unsuitable tackle in the past and regretted it later. My earlier advice against buying a reel for £30 was intended to prevent you from buying a poor quality reel for which spares would probably have been unobtainable. Good Luck with your fishing. :D

The Abu reels do not come supplied with the brake blocks fitted, you will need to fit them before you try to use the reel. If you keep the line level a few millimeters below the spool lip then the reel will be a bit more controllable and be easier to get your thumb over.

Make sure that the spool has a very small amount of side to side movement in it or the bearings can get damaged. Start off with the magnets set to 8 ( max ) and concentrate on being smooth during the cast.

So when I get it I will have to fit the brakes onto the multi myself? Or does it mean I'll have to go buy some?

Does the Mag Elite have Centri brakes?

It's easy enough as it tells you in the instructions exactly what to do ( or better still get your dad to do it for you) Or does it mean I'll have to go buy some? you will find them in a bag inside the box

All you need to do is take off the sideplate pop on the two brake blocks stick the sideplate back on add some line and adjust the side play . Then your ready to roll :D

At long last the reel has been opened! It is a small multiplier, but quite heavy.
Haven't tried it yet, only added some line to it.
My dad birdsnested it by looking at it
It does look one heck of a good reel, with all those twiddly things and levers :)
My Dad hates it:

I can't wait until I get to a casting club to try and learn to use it.
