The way to look at this is you really need both for boat fishing. Flotation and life jacket.
If you fall in the water in the Irish sea you have about 6 mins before hypothermia sets in. The best ways of stoping hypothermia is a floatation suit after this is lots of layers. ie a t-shirt, then a long sleeve tshirt then a light jumper then a heavy jumper. instead of one thick wooly jumper.

i have a mustad viking. its tough and warm. you can lay down on broken glass in it and fall asleep. but if you move around much you sweat loads ie dont go for a walk in. great for night fishing in winter or pike fishing on the bank. price has come down too over the last 2 years. well worth the money. highly recommended.

fladen do good float suits bib and braces have flotation in them i can wade with wellyboots on if you need to hard wearing as well do a lot of rock hopping haven't ripped yet always better to get the 2 piece warmer when its really cold
