Valentia 13th July

Weather was peachy and as we had a mixed crew with four on their first ever trip it was just as well. Outside the bay we started getting plenty of mackerel and lots of launce, never seen so many. It was good fun, seeing the enjoyment the young lads got out of catching mackerel for the first time brought back good memories.

After this the fishing was poor enough to be honest, pollock to 4lb, poor cod, small ling, grey gurnard and whiting turned up whilst drifting. We then anchored up for conger and whilst a good few came aboard there were none over 8lb.

Seen porpoises and two sunfish (seem to be very abundant this year) and even a bait ball. It was no more than 5 feet under the surface, around 3 metres in diameter and seemed to be composed of sandeels. I'd never seen this other than on tv, you could see the birds diving down underneath it and then darting up into the ball and taking a fish. We dropped down feathers and immediately took mackerel, under them again were pollock. Summer time and the sea seems absolutely alive with fish :D
