Wicklow Bay 16th July

Fished a couple of marks on a charter out of Wicklow Town yesterday with a few lads from the job in search of Tope and Smoothhound. Due to the spring tides the skipper was reluctant to head south of the headland so Wicklow Bay it was. Was interesting to see Kiloughter and Five Mile point, where I have done most of my fishing from shore, from the outside looking in. Soon into the session the doggies set in and took fish bait after fish bait on the lads. I held out, despite the least amount of action, with a velvet crab fished on the bottom and eventually was rewarded with a sharp nod in the rod tip and a bit of a scrap with the only Smoothhound of the day. The lads managed a couple of small pollock and a small codling but all in all the fishing was a bit disappointing. Though the Smoothhound certainly made my day!
