Shark season is in full swing on the south coast (video)

Postby JimC » Tue Jul 01, 2014 11:32 am

Shark season is in full swing on the south coast.
As far as I can see all boats are catching most days. Mackerel can be the limiting factor.

I have noticed lots of big sharks so far. Nice for the fight, a bit of a pain wrassling on a small boat :)

Here is a clip from a recent trip: you can see a blue take a bait!

Thanks for the report and video. What size hook would ya use. I'd be hoping to get out for a few sessions here so I'm going to get the rigs ready if I do get the chance.

Thanks lads!
I use a size 14/0 standard hook. They are actually long line hooks. I have the barbs filed down. You could probably get away with smaller hooks but make sure they are strong - A big shark will really test your gear!

Well spotted PhilD. At times there can be a good few sharks cruising around the boat. It is really cool!

Great video JimC, the shark in the still shot at 4.03 looks really glum and depressed, I guess he really is a blue shark! Disappointing to hear that mackerel are a problem; I'm heading down to West Cork soon myself.

Kevin tells me that there is a Scottish contingent at Bellavista this week... They have had tough conditions. I think he got them out at 5am the other morning in order that they could get outside for shark.

Know that feeling. However no matter how early it's worth it if the target is achieved.
Would that crowd be Peter and Co?

Not too sure of their names, he mentioned it in terms of getting them out early.
In fairness to Kevin he's good to give guys their chance when the weather is against.

It was good last year heading out past Roaches Point with the sun coming up. Scenery I would probably not seen if the sacrifice of an early rise had not been made, to boot shark to add. What more can you ask?

Great stuff Jim

I was humming and hawing on whether or not to bring the boat back down for a few trips out, Now that I seen your underwater camera work… the decision is made,

Already packing the kit :-)
