Report:It was bitter cold but well worth it. Didn't expect to get Mackerel this time of year. They were close in workin across the mouth of the estuary. The sprat was a big surprise, never got one of them before, on shrimp rig! Biggest Cod was to 3.5plb

Hiya Neville

Were you on a charter or your own boat, just Force 5-6 is fairly rough!
What size were the macks, good I would imagine this time of year?
Finally, were they right on the bottom or still moving around?

Thanks

Hi Kieran,
I was out on my own boat (18ft Arvor), I wouldn't usually go out in a Force 5 or 6 but it wasn't forecast that day. I do have to say that it wasn't that rough, just mighty windy and cold :( , it was just about fishable a couple of miles off the hook but didn't stay out there very long. We moved in just south of Dunmore East and it was grand and sheltered and thats where we got the mackerel. They were on the move, caught them at various depths. There was a few that were good size( Mighty tasty  ) but surprisingly enough allot of them were small. It was nice to get them this time of year, things are changing every year!

Hi Steve
I was using pink flashers tipped with frozen Mackerel for the Cod about 2miles south of the hook. It was only after we had our cod that that we moved back in and picked up the mackerel. There was no way that i was going to use the fresh mackerel for bait, too precious this time of year, they were for the pan

Hope that helps, Neville
