Bluebird Howth 24.07.11

Mon Jul 25, 2011 4:49 pm

People: Myself, Derek, John

Duration: 5.30 - 8.30

Tide: Full at about 6.40

Weather: calm and sunny

Rigs: Feathers

Results: 35 mackeral and 8 whiting

Report: Started off by picking Derek up at the airport at 3.30pm (he was just back from Poland 3weeks away) bags into the boot and off to get the boat. We didn't even go to his house to drop his bags off (at most 5mins out of the way) as he just was looking forward to getting out fishing. Got the boat and got a call from my dad, told him i was heading out so had the boat hooked up and had to make the dash back to my house to pick up the other life jacket. Got to the harbour and in she went. Meet a lad just as i was entering the harbour and he said mackeral were near balsacading so first call was there.
Got into the mack strat away just 1's and 2's. But i have to say these fellows were monsters long and fat. We fished on the drift and to my asmazment i saw 2 lads without life jackets in the lidl dingy thing. they were around by the bailey. He wasnt the only one as there was a lad on his own in one also by devils rock. All i have to say is thank god the wind didnt pick up. while fishing in balscaden out from the rocks just far enough from the lads to cast to had a break and a swim (i though i was in the med or somewhere). from there we headed up to the cove at islands eye were my rod decided it was its turn to have a swim and down she went. so lads any one is into their salvaging there is an lovely Abu garcia 7000 on a boat rod lurky on the bottom. Devestated as that was lovely reel. From here we tried the back of the island i decided to go to the malahide end and drift back down just before we headed home. when we motored up there was a small speed boat that waved us over. 3 lads on her, the engine wouldnt start and we stranded for an hour. Now as we went over the charter fishing boat seen them and went over. but another boat was in there area for the area and never went over to them. but for some reason between the three of them they had only 2 phones both yes DEAD. We cut the fishing short and towed them back into the harbour slip. i have a battery jumper started with me on the boat at all times and put it onto there engine and up she went. I'm sure it has happended to plenty of people before. But its one thing that is essential also. Never used it myself but lads how many think there engine wont fail be forget about a dead battery??? I have seen them in Aldi lately at €35 and is a great little investment. and the one in Aldi also does as a charger.
all in all an active day with a good few fish caught. Will be heading out again Wednesday after work so finish up run to the car get the boat on and head to howth. Have order a new rod & reel (abu Seven & replace reel Abu garcia 7000).I also 2 other cheap boat rods as spares. Had three boat rods now only two but with time of having 3people on the boat a spare is essiental so they were cheap so got 2 so will have 5 once i get them deliveryed in about 2 weeks time.
Thank god i'm getting out this summer on her as last year after buying the boat i used it 3 times (once fishing for an hour) now this year any chance i get i'm out. Its the life i just needed. Was tempted to put a picture of a mackeral up but i'm sure you know what one looks like.

I hoping to get out tomorrow afterwork so just hope nothing comes up in the mean time. I have been told that the replacement gear i have ordered will be here Friday so at least its only one trip without it. I'm sure alot more people have done the same but wouldn't admit it. I'm sure it wont be the last time i'll have to tow someone in but i just wanted to rmind people about the batteries as i say no matter how good the engine is if the battery is dead she wont be starting. If i'm going out tomorrow i will let you know. Should know by tonight.
