Kieran ....................... they're all laughing at me again!

I'm getting a bit worried as I regularly meet seriously disturbed people, yet they all think it's me that's mad! Anyway, more about them in a minute ................ here's the fishing report, though I'll keep it brief:

Everybody caught fish, though, Pat McGinty apart, no-one caught enough. End of report.

I'm absolutely delighted for Pat who won the Finlater as he is a fellow Lough Swilly Club Member and when you're as bald as he is, you really need something in your life to take your mind off your lack of hair. Frances tries hard, but I have to say that shouting "Hey Baldy, what do you want for dinner" every night isn't really the best way to raise poor Pat's esteem. So there it is - Pat can walk ten foot tall, proud in the knowledge that he is without doubt the baldiest Irish team captain ever ........................ sorry Pat, I mean't the best team captain ever. Don't know whatever made me think of bald. Eagles, that was it, I was thinking about varieties of eagle.

Right, enough congratulating Mr McGinty. On to the other stuff.

I have to say I find it very hard to write a report about such a big competition as I was only on one boat (obviously) and therefore I don't really know what happened on any of the others. Must say I enjoyed my crowd. I was on the Kiwi Girl, ably skippered by Liam Carey with the scoring being administered by Morris. Administered ............ that sounds as if he was giving me out my medication in the hospital, but you know what I mean. Can't remember everyones name but the crew included Michael Goodwin from Bundoran, Liam McDonald, Sylvie who won the Belmullet last week, Yvonne who is Liam's wife, and a few others (sorry - altzheimers setting in).

Strangest wee episode of the day was just after noon. We had steamed west of Inishmurray on our own - next stop Manhatten. Seriously out in open seas. It was not rough, but far from flat. We had got to the stage of the day when we all knew each other, but there was little talk as we were all still concentrating hard. The engine was off so all was quiet. Out of nowhere we heard a voice .....................

"Hello" it said.

We all looked around as we thought someone was acting it.

"Hello up there" the wee voice said again.

It was Yvonne who noticed the guy first. He was paddling a canoe and had sneaked up on us in the middle of nowhere. As if that was not strange enough, I couldn't help finding the next exchange even funnier:

Yvonne - "What's you name? Where are you heading?" she politely enquired.

Liam (from inside the wheelhouse) - "Shut up woman, ignore him and he might go away!"

I was in stitches. I mean, where did Liam think he'd toddle off to? Anyway, canoe-man asks "Which way is it to Malin Beg?"

Now, they call me mad, but there's no way I'd be in the middle of the ocean just hoping that I'd find a boat that could point me in the right direction ..................... especially with skippers like Liam about! Yer man from Killalla who's name escapes me looks about and points exactly in the wrong direction. In fact, he was pointing south west towards home rather than something like due north to Malin Beg. With a little more thought we pointed towards a dip in the hills that was his rough line while he stuffed his face with peanuts. Aye, I thought, completely nuts! Turns out he was a South African who is circumnavigating Ireland before going on to circumnavigate Britain, then he's crossing to France, canoing down the coast of France, the Atlantic coast of Spain, then Portugal before crossing to Morroco where he is ditching his canoe to get in a rowing boat the whole way down the African coast back to South Africa. I truly fear for this guy. I mean - if he didn't know his way to Malin Beg what chance does he have? And, as for his table manners ............... he was stuffing those nuts into his coupon like nobody's business.

Enjoyed the craic back in the hotel after the event. Thanks to Hugo for driving and allowing me to have just the one shandy. A huge thanks to Pat Condon who, at virtually no notice managed to supply some rag after we got let down with our usual supply.

Well done to Munster ..................... not for winning the Interprovincial - you's can pat yer own backs for that - but for having a team member who fished all day and caught the grand total of one Cuckoo Wrasse. It made me feel so much more adequate!

Finished the day off in great fashion back in Letterkenny where the Fleadh was on. Met JGF for a beer and we spent a few hours slagging each other about safety tubes on hooks and swimming off Rathmullen.

A good day - looking forward to the next.

Let me just finish with a wee encounter I had last week with the molls sister. The moll was in Scotland for the week so I visited her sister for some dinner. I told her the following story:

Me: "I was sent back to see the doctor last week Carol."

Carol: "What happened?"

Me: "I went into the doctor and had a sausage sticking out of each ear, baked beans all over my head and some mushrooms sticking out of my nostrils."

............... Carol looked at me perplexed but said nothing ...................

Me: "The doctor looked at me and asked what was wrong. Oh, nothing, I said, I'm just not eating properly." I finished.

Carol looked at me worriedly: "That's a joke isn't it?" she said!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that was the funny bit .................. or was it. Did she really think ................................................

Cheers Phil,

I managed a few fish but nowhere near enough. I had four Pollock, seven Cuckoo and two or three Ballan, but that wasn't even near half enough. I'm usually OK at catching Pollock and Ballan in particular but couldn't get them in any great numbers.

As for the shore - Pat and a few in the club fish it regularly but I've not got into it yet. Sometimes I enjoy fishing off the rocks (occasionally at Fanad lighthouse) but fishing a huge expanse of beach for one or two undersize flatties on a pishing wet winters day doesn't hold as much appeal as ........... well, ............... emmmm, ................... well, a warm pub actually.

Maybe i'll give it a try, but I think you'll be more likely to see me on the boats!
