Portmagee on Saturday

Mon Sep 06, 2010 9:52 am

Who: Missus, 2yo and I
When: Fished from turn of the tide to 3 hrs after on Saturday afternoon.
Where Portmagee channel depth 60 feet.
Conditions:Calm in the harbour but swell out to sea so stayed in the shelter.
What doing:
Trolled rubber eel first for a while, caught a 5lb Pollack
Featherd for mackeral and landed a dozen. Only half were work keeping.
Also caught a sandeel on feathers which was send down as livebait with no result.
Had 2 rigs out on the bottom baited with mackeral strips. These yielded 2 Thornbacks a dogfish and a flounder.
Sizes nothing to shout about but good sport had and a tasty dinner on Sunday.

Nice to see a report from Portmagee. Were you fishing to the left of the bridge if you are looking out towards Valentia from Portmagee? I have had nice thornbacks from the channel but on the Cahirsiveen side of the bridge in chapeltown on Valentia. Always wanted to try that channel from the boat up the Skelligs side of Portmagee. Maybe next year...

Donal.

Don,
Were were fishing 3/4 of a mile west of the Bridge on the Valentia side of the Channel. Its locally known as Foilhammerum.
Hope to fish there again tomorrow if theres not too much swell. If there is, we'll go East the Harbour a bit.

Hugo,
He was only 6 months old when he was out last year. He loves it.
He wears his lifejacket and sits in his seat taking it all in.

Hey Conor,
It's nice to see your catching a few different species from the boat. Still didnt get out yet, between one thing and another the summer has slipped away. Finaly have the boat ready to go, and we hope to launch this sunday weather permitting.

Hi Seanie,
We've had a good summer on the water. We didn't get out much in July and August but we're busy making up for it now. Got out again on Saturday in Portmagee from low water to high water. Mixture of drifting and anchoring. Got nothing on the mackerel baited hooks but plenty mackerel and codling on the feathers and one good pollack while towing a red rubber eel. A lad handline feathering from a punt in the cuas inside us managed some herring on the feathers, mostly foul hooked. I'll be trying that spot next weekend!
