Weather: lovely sunny calm day, lazy slow autumn swell starting to build

Bait: mackerel

Rigs: wire, whitefish rigs, garfish

Results: dozens of garfish, one baby blue, hake, cod, whiting, haddock, pollack, coalie

Report: somebody once wrote you dont catch any fish if its too comfortable,
the drift was only 0.4 knot we only managed to rise one baby blue shark;
nice hake on the bottom

nice marlin tommy, just realised martin's blue was 290lbs, new irish record,
of course he released it for conservation

yes grady, i done quite a few trips out there, never seen a hake caught on rod and line,
then one on each of the last two trips, must be making a comeback, have to get one
myself now

What rig/bait was the hake taken on?

you can probably see the devil rig just in the photo there, luke gives these
out to lads on the boat who dont have sea rigs, obviously with
a chunk of mackerel meat attached as well

i hope they come back like the haddock - first it was one every now
and then, now there are lots around. the whiting are not as abundant,
maybe the swimming crabs chased them off

In fact Martin was using baited black mackerel feathers.

im sure you are correct, i was going on the rig in the pic, but now
i see the second rod in the picture also

well iv never saw hake before well just pease of it ready for cooking, im always imagined that hake belong to family of cod
but it looks quaet diferent that im though, big mouth full of sharp tooth and these fins well to me looks like a creature from the deep amazing fish

thanks for info Tommy, nowdays many spesies not easy to catch for the same reason and the farther the worse

i have heard reports of some fine hake still landed by commercial
gillneters from several venues around our island, including clare.
they seem to be rarely caught on rod on line, ive heard it said
the feed high in the water on the mackerel and garfish in the
dark, maybe a night time shark trip would be fun, still leaves the
question why were two caught on the bottom in daytime
