Sceirde Rocks 15th. August

Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:14 pm

People: Just me
Duration: 1100 hrs until 1600 hrs

Tide: falling and rising

Weather: Fine

Bait: Mackerel

Rigs: feathers, pirks, paternoster

Results: Mackerel, Pollack, Wrasse and several octopus ( nothing worth taking picture of )

Report: Last two outings into Galway Bay were frustrated by spurdogs. They were taking both feathers and baits fished at both the bottom and at mid water. Don't really like catching these nasty beasts. So, after a couple years away from Sceirde, thought that I would head north as the day was fine.
Was immediately into pollack. Was pulling up strings of 3 and 4 at a time, using a pirk with red muppets. The fish were mostly in the 6 to 8 lb range. Moved on and the same results, pollack, pollack and more pollack. This soon became boring. It was difficult to get the pirk to the bottom as the rigs were being taken at mid water. Moved again and was able to reach the bottom. Disappointed not encounter any cod or ling. Later fished hard on the bottom with a mackerel strip and caught wrasse and octopus.
Just out of interest the bottom in this area is remarkable. Variation in depths from 200 feet to 40 feet in just a short distance. So many peaks and valleys.
Anyhow, eventually became bored and lay down on the engine cover and slept. Had a great sleep. Would not recommend this practice to other lone boaters.
Events elsewhere that day have prompted me to check my fire extinguishers. One is in the red zone, so needs replacing.

As a matter of interest Peter , did you anchor or drift while having a snooze? :D
Sceirde rocks sounds interesting. You should try a vertical jig. You might winkle out the bigger pollack.

The day was a dead calm, hence journeying to Sceirde. When fishing there was little or no drift, the only movement was as a result of the tide. So there was no anchoring and the foolishness of snoozing enhanced.
Yes, a heavier pirk ( jigged off the bottom ) and no muppets could have passed by the mid water pollack.
It is certainly the case that pollack numbers in these parts have multiplied and the comparative numbers of cod and ling have decreased.P
