Megabyte - Cromane - 27-06-05

Thu Jun 30, 2005 11:36 pm

People:Myself, wife, daughter + pal - huh! right family outing

Duration: 2-30pm to 8pm

Tide: low water 4-30pm

Weather: sunny, F3 Northerly, got wet heading back in :x

Bait: Fresh Mackeral

Rigs: Mackeral flapper uptide and downtide but with gripper lead and bow in the line

Results: Launched from Cromane and again could not get the bait, ended up taking a run up to Anascaul and got a couple of doz Mackeral no problem, anchored up just outside the channel at the end of Inch, got a few small Thornies, then we moved into the deeper channel, that's when the fun started, I managed to get 3 Tope in the boat with the biggest maybe 40lb?? and missed 1 run only this time, so the hook-ups have improved on last time, the action started 2 1/2hrs into the flood, we had two fish on at the same time, sure we could have have had a lot more as we left at the best time (some were saying - wanna go home  ) good session anyway

uptiding for tope

Sat Jul 02, 2005 12:56 am

Lovely fish.
I havn't tried uptiding for tope before (Have done for ray), what length of trace are you using for the tope and how do you cast it? I normally use 8ft tope traces so don't see how I could cast these with my uptider? Is there a technique. Someone told me you hang the bait of one of the grip wires on the lead and it will come free as it hits the water, does this work?
Any ideas appreciated as I do fancy uptiding to try to get the bait away from the boat to see if makes much difference.
Cheers & Tight Lines.

Deadly fish!! well done

Paul,
I have only been using a 3' wire trace then the grip lead on a boom on the 60lb shockleader, seem to be able to whiz it far enough on that setup, can see a longer trace would give trouble though, so far I cant say i've seen a big difference in takes either uptide or downtide, on that trip I had two rods in one uptide and the other downtide, at exactly the same time they both took off :D Good fun!
Cheers Sean,

Sean,
You are gonna have to let me in your secret of such good tope pics
The brother and I are grazed to bits from struggling with our tope whilst trying to take pics
The results being mostly amazing pics of grazed arms and blurred angry tope

It looks to me like Wide angled lense? Its a great Investment, as on boats you are limited for space to get a good shot.

Well spotted Col & Kev, yeh thats that last time i try and wrap my arm round a Tope, its still a sore one! I read in the sea angler mag putting a towel over there eyes quietens them down, i now see the importance of not bringing them into the boat to early.
Yeh regards the pic its only a point and shoot canon a95 on auto mode, a good day helps with the sun behind the camera and the pic is not quite as good as it looks - the wife took it, this is the original, had to straighten it up a bit, horizon should be level :D

Hi Sean,

Myself and Phildublin are heading down there on the 30th for a week, is the Slip at Cromane good for launching or where is the best place near Inch for launching? Cheers, Rob.

Sean,

Couldn't have a great photo like that sit there with the corners missing - after a little editing here's the doctored version. Great fish & photo.
