swilly explorer. day 2 of the culdaff festival 25/07/2010

Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:05 pm

People: me, jordan and 6 other anglers

Duration: 10am to 4pm

Tide:

Weather: started off nice then the wind got up and persistant drizzle came on

Bait: rag, lug, sand eel

Rigs: feathers and 3 hook flowing traces

Results: mackeral, whiting, red and grey gurnard, pollock, coalfish ballan wrasse and corkwing wrasse

Report:

after getting a pm from paddy during the week to inform me there were a few spots still available for the festival i decided it was time for a road/boat trip to new shores and a plan was put into action :P . we could'nt make it up for the 2 days as i was working on saturday so it would only be a one day affair for us, but it was a chance to get out to somewhere different we had'nt fished before. our alarm went off at 4am and we got sorted and hit the road for 5am. we wanted to get up early to have a look around the place and scout out some new shore marks while we waited for the lads and boats to arrive. so with some potentally fishy looking marks saved on the sat nav we headed to bunagee to get ready for a day out on the open water :P . a few of the lads came over and introduced themselves and soon enough paddy arrived and we got to see what boat we'd be going out on. we were drew onto the swilly explorer with 5 other lads and before too long we were rigging up and heading out to catch a few mackeral for bait. within a few minutes we had enough for the day and we set off to the rough ground mark where we'd spend the first few hours of the comp and a good stream of fish were being landed all around us and we were getting in on the action too with some lovely ballan wrasse to specimen weight landed and some cracking pollock to around 7lb. the following drifts produced more of the same with the odd corkwing wrasse thrown in for good measure. but sadly it was over all too quickly and we were off to the clean ground section of the comp. some of the lads were pulling in red and grey gurnard 3 at a time and ther were all pretty respectable sizes too :P . there were a few whiting around too and a quick move had us over a massive shoal of coalies ranging from 2lb to 5lb. they fought really well as every one of our 3 hook rigs had a coalie on each hook wanting to head off in a different direction   . it was great craic and we had a great day out, but it was over all too soon  . when we got back in to port some of the lads informed us that there was gonna be a bit of a do back in the pub with the results of the comp, but we got there a bit early and waited round for an hour or so and no one had turned up yet and both of our eyes were beginning to close so we called it quits and hit the road. i was dissappointed we did'nt get to see the lads again, but a week's work and a serious lack of sleep had taken it's toll and we were knackered and called it quits. but we had a great day's fishing and got to put some faces to names and the craic on the boat was mighty. what more could you ask for   .
does anyone know where the results are being posted as i've looked all round the net and on the site and i can't find them yet?

cheers man. we were out at the marquee, but we went straight up from the harbour and did'nt realize a lot of the lads were going home or off to get a bite to eat first   . we would have stuck around longer but my eyes were going togeather and we still had the drive home to do yet. but i think i'll get sorted out better for next year and get us in for the 2 days as it was great craic :P. jordan was made up to hear he'd beaten me on the fish scores  that's why i was looking for the results, he is wanting to rub my nose it it as usual

thanks paddy. we'll try and make it up for the full weekend next year and book a B&B. we had a great day out and we thought the fishing was great. a few of the lads mentioned that the day before produced loads more fish  , so i can only imagine how frantic it must have been as we thought the sunday was brilliant as it was

Drew wrote:Nice to see Angela and Co. putting you on the fish AnJ, Good day out!

thanks drew. it was a great boat and the first time we were out on one with so many home comforts available :D most of the charters we normally go out on are a lot less well equipted. i remember going out on a trip out of portrush when a fella asked where the toilet on the boat was as he needed to lose a few kilos from the night before. the skipper handed him a black bag and told him that WAS the toilet

Hi Alan & Jordan, i was beside you both on the stern of the boat on Sunday, the fishing was very good and really glad you both enjoyed the fishing and made the effort to atten. It was great to see Jordan battling against those coalies three at a time, great stuff. I think i caught a glimpse of you before the prize-giving in the bar but was in the middle of a phone call and once i got off you had vanished, cheers anyway for sticking it out for so long and hopefully you'll be back next year to sample more of what culdaff has to offer. CiarĂ¡n.

thanks very much ciaran. we had a blast and we'll be back next year to do it properly over the 2 days so we can squeeze in a few shore sessions too  :D :D . the fishing was fantastic but my only regret was not taking a photo of the massive grey gurnard i caught on the mackeral feathers before the comp started as it was the biggerst grey i've ever caught or seen      . but sure,,, there's always next year
