Nout at Roches Point 24 May

Mon May 24, 2010 11:05 pm

First day out in the boat this year in Cork harbour. Tried out 2 new rods and a new reel. Fished for 45 minutes drifting with mackerel baited feathers on two rods off Roches point about 2 hrs into the ebb tide and caught a huge Nout ie nothing. No fish showing on the sounder either. Boats around us not catching either. Heard first hand that there were Cod going earlier. Glorious day on the water though.

Easterly winds did not help I clocked up over 40nm plenty of fish showing but they were not on the feed.

Ended the day with a nice box of fish but I’d been out there on better days

One good thing about it was that the surface temperature was reading just over 13C compare to 10C last weekend and mackerel are showing in patches

I was fishing the inner harbour yesterday evening between 6pm and 8pm. We had a good few codling and a few dabs and then the doggies came out in force, hauling them in for an hour solid before we packed it in and headed off. I've friction burns on my wrists from trying to unhook them. There are still a fair few codling around but they're getting a bit thinner on the ground. Try changing rigs as baited feathers aren't the best for codling or flatties.
