Results: 8 whiting.. 2 pout.. 1 octopussy.. 2 Pollock,

Report:

Thank god for the easterly wind as it calmed the sea for me to get out from kilkee on Saturday and Sunday,

A deep depression has hit kilkee… at least it hit the people that K/C spoke to before I arrived there,
one person he spoke to about going out said !!! We shouldn’t bother because ye wont catch a thing over this easterly wind,

Another sad chap that we met on the slip didn’t fancy our chances either… he really didn’t look happy as he too readied his boat for launch … I got the impression that this guy would only be happy if he caught nothing while out so then he could say!! I told you so,

So with all this encouraging news swimming around in my head I asked K/C to bring his headlight as we may be out till late,

We fished for an hour or so with not even a bite then K/C made my day by catching a pouting, so with the blank saved we relaxed, then the whiting started in bits and drabs,

We ended up with seven nice size whiting for the pan K/c also caught an octopus… another first for the boat,

Sunday was a lot quieter… K/c started the ball rolling again with another blank saving pouting then I caught my first ever cuckoo wrasse and not to be beaten K/c landed a second cuckoo before I could unhook mine,

What a beautiful looking fish they are… cant remember who caught the only whiting of the day but not long before we packed in I got a massive bite and line ripped off the reel… after 5mins or so I boated the 2 Pollock and noticed that one of the four hook lengths had either been bitten or snapped off but I was happy with what I landed,

It started to get a bit windy and a little choppy so as my mane engine had failed me which left me with an old 4hp Johnson to limp home with we packed up… Funny thing about 15 mins into the return trip with the little engine fighting the wind and tide I looked at K/C and he says!! Are we moving mate… lol

I have to say the same question had popped into my head just before I turned to look at him.. If the wind had been just a touch stronger we could very well be eating raw fish about now on our way to the USA,

I really enjoyed this trip and to catch a few fish was a bonus,

I also learned a little from this trip!!! That being I need a bigger aux engine and a radio.

Well done lads it's nice to be able to get out this time of year and we have to take our chances.
You did right to ignore the moaners about lack of fish getting out there is what it's all about and they certainly will not catch anything sitting at home moaning.

your not wrong when you say ignore the pessimists, Nothing was going to stop me going out, Fact is i much prefer to hear them moan about how hard it is to get fish because when you do go and catch that first fish even though it was a pouting it feels a lot better,

I will try get the 7.5hp aux running for next time out so as not to have you worry about getting home
after catching them pollock just before the return trip i dont think the smile would have left my face untill we hit a rock and the boat sank... even then i think the smile would have returned as we clung to the cliff face awaiting rescue

well lads,great to get out,well done on a couple of firsts for the boat,in my opinion the east wind does make a difference,but sometimes its just great to get out,regards,eddie.....

Any wind that lets you go to sea in February is a godsend
Any fish you catch in February is a godsend - and those are delicious looking boyos
But no radio Lads ye really are Lucky B's....

About the auxilliary, after 4hp I find they start getting heavy and awkward and if the boat is small you have to start thinking about trim issues, not to mention the back. I have a 5 and I wouldnt like it any heavier. I was told 1hp per metre length is the formula.

I fully agree with you about the easterlies, they really do make a difference, but I have found “at times” that unless we have a prolonged spell of easterlies your still in with a chance,
Especially in over 100ft of water… I may be just a lucky b myself

I also agree with you on this, I'm taking the VHF Module 1 & 2 next month.

Nice bit of info there Hugo, the boat i have at the moment is low at the transom but i hope to have a more sea worthy orkney for next year, it all depends on getting my act together and doing a little extra work.

I went out from tarbert about a couple of months ago and had thornback not too far from the slip, i plan a few more trips around there during the summer so i might see you out there.

Good to hear that you got out, that cuckoo wrasse is some looking fish we fished up the coast a wee bit on Friday night and all we hit were tiny pin whiting, hey thats february for you if your ever short a deck hand give us a shout, i was down in kilkee during the week with work and things were very quiet roll on the next couple of months

Soon as the weather picks up I will have the boat moored in Kilkee and hope to spend all my free time there, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to pop out for a few hours… But I have to warn you that wants you get a taste for this easy fishing you will be buying your Mrs a boat as an anniversary present,

There are some great marks not far from kilkee that fish really well during the summer, first time out I was just searching blindly for fish and caught fat Pollock / Ling / Red & Grey gurnard / Haddock & Mackerel,

But even on a slack day its great to be out so you should enjoy it, there’s only room for 2 fishing on this boat and I think it works out best because of the danger of leads and rigs swinging about… least you only have to keep an eye on one guy which in itself can be hard depending on who’s with you ,

I just checked to see if I had your number on my phone but cant find it.. I’m sure you gave it me before, either way I will contact “Johnny Doc” when I put the boat out so he will let you know,

Your boat may find itself a permanent home down there if its what I’m looking for, thats if you aint got someone lined up for it, feel free to PM any details of the boat, a picture would be nice so I will know what to look out for when you park her up
