Report:
was picked up by Goldwing and Doggie3131 at 7am... and straight to the peir to see if we could get some fresh bait...
spinning rods were out and an uptider too to try and get some bait and i managed to be first to catch with a small pollock.. and slowly the rest of the crowd appeared..
wasnt long before we were under way, and three teams of two were made up to see which team would/could catch most species..
the Maighdean Mara which from now on will be named 'The Vomit Rocket' especially for the 2 'jackeens' aboard headed south into increasing swells and winds..
soon before long we were drifting to see what was about and a few mackerel and pollock and even a scad, but wasnt producing too much and the swell was making 3 of the 6 go green in the gills..so we moved closer to the shore to try and get into some shelter..
a quick move and straight in to pouting.. and not tiddlers either then managed to pluck up whiting and haddock.., then i got a rather strange pull.. and lifted out a squid.. yeay.. fresh calamari for dinner.. and then back to pouting again.. we reset the drift and anchored above a ledge.. and more pouting... then the lads downt he back of the boat started to shad and a few nice pollock came aboard.. so i though what the hell i'll give it a shot as i promised a bit of fish to a couple of people.. first cast went a fair distance 4oz leadhead shad.. and just as it came back into view, i saw the pollock come up and take it at the surface.. sorted with the fillet for friend so back to try and get a few more species..
so to try for something different i tried a bait on the bottom.. and pulled out a nice doggie straight away.. upon seeing this doggie3131 straight out with the baits.. so i changed hooksize and snood size, and waited... went for a little hobble around the deck and heard my the ratchet on the sl30sh go.. a good bend it the rod suggested a good fish was on. closer to the surface it was obvious that it eas a good huss.. lifted into the pboat and photo taken.. and reckon weighing about 5.5lbs (even though doggie3131 reckons about 8lbs)
back to catchin dogfish...
then we extended the rope on the anchor and the skipper brought out a spinning rod with a squid lure, and seemed to be pulling out quite a few squid.. so i asked for a shot at them(even though i had managed one without).. managed to get about 6 squid in before passing it over to someone else.. and back to catching pouting again..
time was slowly getting the better of us so back to dry land and to get some food into the stomachs of those who lost it overboard...
the final tally of the little come goes like:
english lads : 11 species
the 'jackeens': (dont remember them actually picking up a rod, but made the most noise while groundbaiting)
irish and scot: er.. who cares.. after all the English lads won
i'm sure doggie3131 will add pics in his report of events...
