Report:not much to report lovely day little to no wind fish still scarce went out to fish for huss ect only dogs answered the call. at about 3 o clock we headed in to the island as there was a swell starting to come up we were drifting about 300 yrds off the island seen a raider 18 very near the rocks .i said to arthur they must be mad been so close there were 2 other boats nearer to them. kept fishing for a couple of minutes then i see the boat caught in the alcove at the stack pulled up the lines headed over to them there now trying to push the boat away off the stack the swell has them trapped. there engine wont start we tried to get a line on there boat but the swell and the rope was pulling us on to the rocks after 3 attempts we finally got them to safety there battery was dead so i had a spare battery and they jumped the engine they were both very shaken theythanked us and off they went. what i cant understand is the 2 boats nearer to the lads dident ask or give any assistance just kept fishing i cant get a grip on this even if they dident know they were in trouble they saw us struggling to get them out i hope they never need help at sea because there might be only someone like them to rescue them people with tunnel vison not only could these lads have lost there boat but there lives as there is no were to climb at the stack its just shear rockface

Did the boat in trouble not establish radio contact with anybody to report their difficulties?

Fairplay twinkle for assisting, and like you said, its worrying to think there are boat users out there who couldnt give a damn about helping a stricken vessel

they were trying to sort the battery and the current was so quick they were on the rocks before they realized these other boats were less than 50 yrds away!

Fair play twinkle a dangerous enough move for yourselves as well , glad it all worked out well.

Surely the radio call should come 1st

they had lost power no battery shamoo very easy to happen the altanator was gone on the boat its why i have an auxillery
engine and a second battery on board the sea takes no prisoners

Right, so they had battery difficulty, and hence couldnt radio for help

I'd imagine a high percentage of boating incidents at sea involve a loss of power one way or the other, so surely a 2nd battery (or auxilary battery) to provide power to electric equipment (the radio being the single most important part of this equip) is essential

Did the boat involved have mobile phones onboard to call the nearest harbour/coast guard, or was the spot they were at out of coverage

Eitherway its a warning to all boat users to pay the utmost respect to safety......it could be you one day

As you say, an aux engine would never be a bad investment

And again, hats of to you twinkle for assisting, even with the potential danger to yor own craft/crew

ha ha ha john i find it hard to keep up with one boat just glad no one was injured or worse they said they were from fingal angling club they probley hit the pub at speed to calm the nerves

fair play for helping out,it was good that some one in the area had a bit of common sense
i think any boat owner should also carry a small hand held radio as a back up radio
the other boats remind me of the lads in cars that wont move out of the way of a ambulance,they never think that it might be them that needs help one day
