43rd Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival Day 3

Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:56 pm

People:52 Anglers

Duration:All day (Thursday 3rd Sept)

Tide:HT 17:55pm (3.9m)

Weather:W F5 Sunny spells with heavy showers

Bait:Mackeral & Ragworm

Rigs:Various

Results:Better than day 1 and day 2

Report:The fishing area for day 3 was designated as the same as for day 2. As the first half of the day was to be on the drift most boats again opted to fish the Smiths. All anglers were supplied with rag and the drift fishing certainly produced interesting results, despite the fact that the strong westerly breeze probably made the drift too fast. Nevertheless, plenty of fish were caught and the species count was dramatically increased over the previous two days. The only drawback was that the min size of 280mm meant that many of the fish, particularly the cuckoo wrasse, were just marginally out. Below is a pic of Carrigaline SAC President, John Sheehan, with a typical cuckoo. John must have had well over a dozen, all were agonisingly just short of the measure:

Good ling and cod were also recorded. Below is a pic of Cobh SAC member, Gerard Richardson, with a fine cod that he bagged on mackeral baited hokkais:

A total of 269 fish made the measure on the day. Best fish was a 9kg conger but some of the ling, cod, and bullhuss came close. The winner was Gerard Gersjes of Holland, with Paul Evans of Wales second and Mike Stelling of Wales third. Best lady was Sandra O' Shea of Cobh SAC with Tina Kneeshaw of Crosshaven a close second.
