Hi Guys,
Don’t know where to start... Firstly my shark trip on 15/8 was cancelled due to the weather. Although it started to improve towards the weekend, in telephone conversation with skipper we decided not to go.
I was walking about with my woman on Saturday evening when skipper rang me saying that he got cancellation for Sunday (weather was improved since previous day) and if that’s any good for me. So I started ringing through every fish-o-number I found in my cell. Believe or not every single hard-core angler that I know got “other plans” for Sunday already. You are not dedicated enough lads!
So I rang the skipper back but decided that before I start bugging him for a discount, due to me being on my own I asked him whether he got someone for that trip.

It turned out that cancellation was due to withdrawal of 3 out of 6 members of the other group. So remaining 3 lads decided to go sharking if I’m going.
So after all that, I found myself @6:30 AM in my car heading to Unionhall

Trip itself was rather quiet. After 1,5 hour after setting up we got first run. Skipper and two lads brought shark to the boat after fair fight. Then together with the skipper we landed the shark. Nice blue 213 cm hooked in to lower jaw. No stomach out. And that was it for the day.
And now... the theory.
We were thinking what was the single biggest difference compared to last weekend’s trip. Skipper reckoned that it was strength of the wind which caused very quick drift as we drifted over 8 miles in relatively short time. As blue sharks are nocturnal feeders during the day they not chasing anything. Especially not boats with anglers. So shark once pick up on ruby-dubby scent is not rapidly homing to the source of scent but rather slowly keeps cursing along towards it. With quick drift he might never catch up with the boat and bait.
Now, what are you thinking about that?
Other nice stuff was encounter with sunfish and unidentified whale.
