That would be it's Eye

we now have a estimated weight of between 200lb and 220lb for it, so it could well have broken the Irish record

Hey Davy,
I was rather asking about that mark further down from the eye. Was curious whether it is some sort of natural scar or rather something that happen in the process of landing the fish.
Anyway that is a very nice fish.
How did you guys estimated its weight? I'm assuming that based on TL, FL and G (can't remember the equation exactly - the one with 800 factor in it). I'm curious what was the total length of that fish.
All the best!

Ah that unfortunatly was damage done by the hook during the fight and when the fish was being held at the side of the boat.

The first estimate of over 180lb came from me trying to lift the fish into the boat myself, having had way more than my fare share of Commons I knew it was a heavy fish. The estimated weight of 200 - 220lb has come about after comparing the fish to the pictures of the Welsh record Blue which was held in the exact same position so we were able to take a comparison off that.
Dimension wise it was 109 TL, girth was 42" and the FL was 90.2"

Amazing fish. Have to say well done on putting it back and not trying to claim a record just for the sake of it. Great to know that fish is still out there for someone else to catch. I definitely think something needs to be done regards the records lists to allow captures like this to stand. Not that I have much chance of ever making it onto them
