Rod 'n' reel, Unionhall, 8/8/9

Sun Aug 09, 2009 10:07 pm

People: Peresada, Tomaszek, TPE
Duration: 9:00 – 18:00
Tide: ebb than flood, min~@13:15
Weather: Cloudy and misty, than a good few bits of sun, than cloudy again and quite nice sun at the end. Water temp. 16 °C
Bait: Scomber scombrus
Rigs: 15ft wire with swivel in the middle 200lb + 2ft bite trace 275lb
Results: 5 sharks (3 on boat) + pollack (10lb best), ling, whiting, cocco wrasse
Report:
Next day after wreck fishing, I was heading to Uniohall harbour to meet with skipper Jim and my two friends. We started with catching few mackerel for bait. We got plenty of frozen ruby-dubby so we caught just enough for bait. After 30 maybe 40 minutes after setting up we got first run on my rod. After short fight we got first baby-blue on boat. Fish was hooked in mouth but deep enough, so it spat out it’s stomach. I’m cutting off bite trace to release fish without unnecessary delay.

After this fist catch there is a few hours of quiet. We’re trying to kill time by catching reef fish. Best pollack was 10lb and it took on orange shad on 3oz jig head.

Suddenly my reel starts screaming again. I’m quickly tightening drag and starting to play another blue shark. This one is slightly bigger. TL: 185, FL: 150: G:60

In the same time while I was playing a fish Peresada got run on his rod. Unfortunately he struck too fast and end up with half of mackerel on his hook. We got back to reef fishing while TPE had 4th run of the day. This time my good friend was waiting too long and shark eventually spat out the bait. After another 30 minutes we got 5th run of the day on my rod again! And what a run it was. At start we thought that in may be a porbeagle as run was in constant pace. After tightening the drag on my reel for second time shark stopped and I was pretty sure at that stage that this is a blue shark. Inch by inch started to reeling in the fish. But shark suddenly start rushing towards the boat and going round it. It made a full 360° lap around the boat, spreading panic and chaos on the deck (broken rod, etc...). After several runs we finally could see him. And it turns out that he wasn’t much bigger than the previous one. Skipper made a joke that he must had been drinking red bull. TL: 188, FL:~150, G:~65 or more as my measuring tape gave up…

We stayed 1 hour more but action for that day was over. Pity for my friends that they hadn’t managed to land a shark this time, but I can’t complain.

very nice fishing tommy, my understanding is sharks routinely turn their stomachs
inside out like this to empty contents without harm. the amazing thing is they don't bite it!

This is second shark I saw that spat out the stomach. In both cases I could see teeth marks on it, but no blood. Previous one that spat out its stomach took a bait that was on the rig fixed to braided line. It cut through braid with no problem and that took my bite. So second hook it swallowed with mac, caused him to spat out stomach. This guy was just hooked deeper. I could try to retrieve a hook but I reckoned that it will be better for shark to just cut off wire. So I think that stomach out indicates that strike was too late.

seems to happen quite regularly, most likely a defense mechanism certain shark species can imply.
