Day 1 - GreystonesHeaded into the bank holiday the same as everyone else expecting 20kmh winds as forecast so was doubtful of getting in a decent session or two, but in true Met Eireann style they again got it wrong – very wrong! I woke on Sunday morning to look out onto a flat calm sea with blue sky’s and not a hint of even a sea breeze. Phoned Gav and told him to get his arse in gear and down to Greystones ASAP. We were in the water for around 10.30am launching in queue with a least 5 other boats including John1. Nice meeting you John.
Headed off out past the Moulditch to get some fresh macks on board. 3 hours later only a herring was on board for Tope bait. We hit a myriad of small species but not a sign of Macks. Eventually by 3pm we were drifting past the Moulditch about 300/400 metres east to be exact and bang - full strings all round

. Got on the radio to John to let him know we found them and by the time he had got over our run of them was over!!! Typical. We tried hard for the rest of the day but only winkled out dogs and some small Huss. Great day to be out and good craic if nothing else but it was clear that there was little or no sign of the elusive Tope that we always take as a given off Greystones. The water temperature was around 10.8 degrees so maybe it’s still a little cold?
Gavin takes a firm clasp of his favourite fish – the Irish Dog!

Ahh that’s the right one – a nice little Huss

John Battles the rough sea conditions
Day 2 - WicklowDespite the mediocre fishing had the day before you could not pass up the chance to be on the water again. Kev and I planned another Greytones launch, but to instead try some marks offshore for Macks and Tope. I drove down the hill and noticed that there were no boats out in Greystones. This was odd I thought, Bank Holiday Weekend, Perfect Conditions – what’s going on?

I pulled up to the slip all fired up again only to be greeted with the reason why there were no boats out! A yacht was parked on the slip!

I arrived late so I can only imagine if other lads were trying to get out before me and what arguments took place!. There were plenty of angry people protesting at the foreign couple who owned it but I just wanted to get out fishing so myself and Kev left them at it and towed to Wicklow instead. There is a grand slip there and we were on the water in no time, again on the hunt for Macks! Struggling again for macks we decided to pull up in under Wicklow head for a spot of Wrasse bashing.
We had great craic on light tackle and had a load of minis before hitting some half decent east coast Wrasse.
Overall the fishing was not great but it’s great to be out and if nothing else try different things.
The nice couple who nearly ruined my Bank Holiday!!

Wicklow Head

Don’t say I don’t give you any marks!!
